Christmas Cantata

"Canticles in Candlelight: a Cantata for Christmas" by Joseph M Martin will be presented at 5 p.m. on Sunday, December 21, at the FirstUnited Presbyterian Church of Las Vegas.

The program features music, scripture, narration and the lighting of candles to convey the Christmas story.  It alsoincludes opportunities for the audience to join in singing traditional carols.

Performers include the church choir, piano, and narrator.

Bach Marathon

Save the afternoon of November 16 on your calendar for Highlands University's Bach Marathon, including a number of acts from the community, The HU concert and madrigal choirs, the New Mexico Bach Society and orchestral players from the Santa Fe Symphony and the Albuquerque Philharmonic. At Ilfeld auditorium, where else?

School Bands Perform

West Las Vegas's Mariachi del Oeste and other bands from Robertson High School, Memorial Middle School, Santa Fe and Mora will perform in a concert starting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 27, at the Gillie Lopez Gym on the west campus. Tickets are $7 per person.

Fiesta de la Hispanidad

Fiesta de la Hispanidad will celebrate its 20th year Friday evening, March 28 in Ilfeld Auditorium.

This year’s fiesta will start with pre-show entertainment at 6 p.m. by Joaquín Maestas-Manuel’s Mariachi de lo de Mora from Mora Schools, until 6:30 p.m.,

Jazzology Sings Ellington

Jazzology, the local jazz vocal group, will perform a birthday salute to Duke Ellington on April 26.  The concert is in observance of Ellington's 115th birthday on April 29 and in remembrance of the Duke's appearance at Highlands in 1967.

The group, led by Joe Cooney, will be joined by Ann Mishler on the piano, Ralph Marquez on drums, and Ed Harrington on bass.

HU Joins Symphony

More than 20 singers from the New Mexico Highlands Universlty music program will join with the Santa Symphony Orchestra and Chorus to present Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 at the Lensic Performing Arts Center in Santa Fe in May.

These final concerts of the Symphony's 30th anniversary season also include Brahm's Tragic Overture.

Locals at Cathedral

Several local musicians will perform in the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in Santa Fe on April 12.

The will be participating in the Santa Fe Community Orchestra's production of Mendelssohh's oratio "Elijah" under the leadership of Oliver Prezant. Participants from Las Vegas include E.J. Nelson in the orchestra and Christie Basket, John Liddel and Richard Lindeborg in the chorus.

Mozart and Faure at Ilfeld

The Highlands University Concert Choir will present two masterpieces of sacred choral music on April 13 In Ilfeld Auditorium.

The pieces are "Coronation Mass" by Mozart and "Requiem by Gabriel Faure.

The "Coronation Mass" gets its nickname from an early performance at the annual ceremony of crowningof the miracle-working appearance of the Virgin Mary near Salzburg, Austria.  The mass will be performed by a solo quartet and chorus, with piano accompaniment.

HU Stages Opera

Dido, the queen of Carthage, is swept off her feet by Aeneas, the Trojan hero on his way to found the Roman Empire -- with disasterous results, of course.  All the characters and the chorus will advance the plot in song (and in English),  as the Highlands University El Coro de la Tierra Alta and guests perform the baroque opera "Dido and Aeneas" by the british composer Henry Purcell.

Grease comes to HU

The HU Singers will present the musical "Grease" on Friday and Saturday February 28, March 1, 2014, in Ilfeld Auditorium on the HU campus at 7:30 p.m.   Tickets are $5; students with valid ID are FREE
