    Justin DeHoog roped a single to right center in the bottom of the 12th inning, enabling James Cordova to score the walk-off winning run in New Mexico Highlands’ 8-7 tally against Colorado Christian on Friday at Brandt Park.

    The Cowboys have shown a penchant for pulling off such late-game and extra-inning heroics this season. They just haven’t found the win column enough.

    West Las Vegas became one of the last eight softball teams remaining in the Class 4A state tournament by eliminating Hope Christian 12-2 on Wednesday morning at Cleveland High in Rio Rancho.

    The Lady Dons struck first before the Huskies closed within 3-2 by the end of the second inning. But the rest of the game belonged to West, which advanced to play No. 2 seed Bernalillo Wednesday afternoon.

    Robertson’s return to the state golf tournament – as an entire team – proved fruitful, as the Cardinals placed third behind champion Portales and runner-up Hope Christian.

    The two-day Class 1A-4A tournament concluded on Tuesday afternoon at the par-72 Canyon Club at Four Hills in Albuquerque.

    ALBUQUERQUE – The energy was unmistakable, and the excitement was palpable as each of Robertson’s girls singles tennis competitors began to close out wins against rivals from St. Michael’s on the Albuquerque Academy complex early Saturday afternoon.

    One by one, the post-match handshakes came, and in each case, the verdict was in favor of the same team.

    Meadow City athletes combined to win a dozen first-place medals in this past weekend’s District 2-4A track and field meet held primarily at Cardinal Stadium.

    Robertson senior Arjay Ortiz prevailed in the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles as well as the javelin.

    West Las Vegas senior Miguel Coca swept to wins in the three distance running events – the 800, 1,600 and 3,200.

    According to La Plaza Little League Vice President Nick Montoya, a special cleanup session is scheduled for Wednesday at Rodriguez Park.

    The cleanup will take place from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Montoya said the session will also be an opportunity for the board to let the community know that it is addressing all concerns of players, parents and spectators.
