  • Rangers repeat as district champs

    MORA — Mora baseball seniors Alonzo Aragon and Javier Branch got to walk off their home field one last time as District 5-2A champions on Tuesday evening, as parents, coaches and teammates gave them hugs and high fives.

    In a doubleheader showdown between the district’s two unbeatens — Mora and Cimarron — the Rangers secured the championship by first overwhelming the visiting Rams 12-1 in game one and then keeping game two close enough to claim a head-to-head tiebreaker.

    West Las Vegas High School baseball coach Shannon Aragon recently served a two-game suspension for an altercation in which a parent charges the coach cursed, yelled at and intimidated his son at a field after a recent game.

    Keeping its fading RMAC playoff hopes alive, the New Mexico Highlands baseball team (18-28, 13-19) won three of four games at Adams State over the weekend.

    Shannon Hunt’s Cowboys have one series left – a four-game homestand against Colorado Christian this Friday and Saturday at Brandt Park. They’ll likely have to win at least three and get help from Adams State to make it into the last playoff spot.
