  • Homecoming rout - Raton no match...

Robertson and Raton combined for 35 points in the first quarter Friday night.

The first six were the Tigers’.

The rest belonged to the Cardinals — who were just beginning an eventual 55-6 beatdown.

It played out before Robertson’s 2014 homecoming crowd at Cardinal Stadium, and the few raindrops were far from adequate to dampen the enthusiasm for the undefeated Redbirds.

The Cardinals moved their record to 7-0 as they prepare for the District 2-4A schedule, which starts with Pojoaque Valley’s visit this coming Friday.

  • Dons win second in a row

Fans of Jose Juan Montaño had been waiting for a night like this one.

Montaño delivered on Friday night in Tucumcari, passing for 492 yards and eight touchdowns in a 67-36 shootout victory — the Dons’ second in a row following an 0-5 start.

Perhaps the most important statistic — other than the final score — is completion percentage. Montaño was unofficially credited with 31 of 39 passes on target, with several different receivers on the other end of them.

  • Highlands football stumbles at...

Forced to climb out of a 24-0 hole, the New Mexico Highlands football team stumbled to a 31-19 defeat Saturday at Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction, Colo.

The Cowboys (2-4 overall, 2-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) played stretches of the game without starting quarterback Lance Orender and a leading receiver.

With backup QB Tanner Wright at the controls, the Cowboys eventually rallied, outscoring the host Mavericks 19-7 over the final 20 minutes.

West Las Vegas volleyball enjoys a lofty statewide ranking — No. 6 in the most recent NMOTSC.com poll — but head coach Karli Salazar says her team remains a work in progress.

“They’re improving,” she said of her Lady Dons. “But we have a lot of unforced errors at this point.”

  • No. 1 Cardinals tackle homecoming

There have been years when the Robertson-Raton football game was a red-letter date on the calendar, a marquee matchup between two northern New Mexico state title contenders and District 2-3A rivals whose fans regularly and vociferously complain about the referees’ favorable treatment of the other.

  • Six pack to go - RHS bests...

Robertson picked up its 11th win in 14 girls’ soccer matches Tuesday with a 6-1 verdict against visiting Capital.

The Lady Cardinals AKA Beastie Girls are currently ranked fourth among Class 1A-4A girls’ soccer teams in New Mexico, trailing only Hope Christian, St. Michael’s and Sandia Prep.

Morgan Diefendorf and Amber Yara scored two goals apiece, and Caitlin Diefendorf and Alicia Jaramillo bookended the match with one goal each.

  • HU runners fare well in Arkansas

The New Mexico Highlands cross country teams turned in numerous career bests at the 2014 Chili Pepper Festival, hosted by the University of Arkansas this past Saturday.

“It was a great day to get out on the course,” head coach Bob DeVries said. “It was cool and crisp with more than 350 runners in each race. It was just a great atmosphere for cross country and racing.”
