    New Mexico Highlands broke a 1-1 stalemate by scoring a pair of second-half goals within 15 seconds, and the Cowgirls picked up a critical three points with a 3-1 win against CSU-Pueblo Friday night at Perkins Stadium.

    All three local gridiron teams are playing home games this weekend.

    Defending state champion and No. 1 ranked Robertson will kick off district play against Pojoaque Valley at 7 p.m. Friday at Cardinal Stadium. Coach Leroy Gonzalez’ group is 7-0 and averaging more than 287 rush yards per game. The visiting Elks are 3-4, coming off a 35-7 loss to St. Michael’s.

  • Quintana wins 2nd in a row

    West Las Vegas’ Joedy Quintana triumphed in her second consecutive golf tournament Tuesday, winning the Robertson High Invitational by three strokes.

    The tourney was hosted by the Pendaries Golf Course in Rociada.

    Quintana, who won last week’s WLV Invitational by shooting an 83 at Highlands’ Gene Torres Golf Course, has already qualified for the Class 1A-4A state tournament.

  • District openers in volleyball...

    West Las Vegas defeated Taos in four games on Tuesday night in the District 2-4A opener, held in Taos.

    The Lady Dons started strong with 25-17 and 25-12 wins. But the Lady Tigers rallied and won a slugfest in game three, 26-24. West then closed out the night with a decisive 25-15 result in the fourth set.

    It was the second match in as many nights for the Lady Dons, who took Class 5A’s third-ranked Española Valley to four games in defeat Monday at Gillie Lopez Gym.

    West is ranked sixth in Class 4A.

  • Highlands’ Koster earns 2nd award

    New Mexico Highlands senior Jared Koster is the first repeat athlete of the Subway Eat Fresh Student-Athlete of the Week honor.

    Against Colorado Mesa on Oct. 11, Koster led the New Mexico Highlands football team (2-4, 2-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) for the sixth time in tackled. He recorded 12 solo tackles and five assisted tackles for 17 total tackles, the second-most in a game this season for the linebacker. He also recorded two tackles for loss.

    Kyanna Spaulding and Kevin Villanueva have been selected as West Las Vegas Student-Athletes of the Month for October.

    Kyanna Spaulding is a junior and is an active member of the Lady Dons volleyball team. Spaulding is maintaining a 4.10 GPA and plans on attending Georgetown University upon graduation in 2016. She says her goal is to become a Hoya and pursue a degree in political science and political communication. Spaulding adds she plans to continue her education beyond her B.A. and work towards a degree in law.

  • RMAC hoops polls released

    After finishing 11-15 overall — and 8-14 in league play — last winter, the New Mexico Highlands men’s basketball team found itself on the outside looking in when playoffs rolled around.

    New head coach Craig Snow, whose credentials include a stint as an assistant for Craig Neal and the New Mexico Lobos, looks to improve on that finish.

    Snow takes over for Joe Harge.

    The Cowboys are projected to finish 10th in the 14-team Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, per a preseason coaches’ poll released this week.
