  • RHS girls outlast Taos

    As the evening got later Wednesday, Hannah Lopez went from bit player to the deciding factor in Robertson’s 3-1 win over Taos in the first match of the District 2-4A volleyball tournament.

    The Lady Cardinals won 27-25, 22-25, 25-20 and 25-17, advancing to a Thursday night semifinal at Pojoaque Valley. The winner of that contest will play at regular-season champ West Las Vegas on Saturday night for the district championship.

  • Rugby upset: Vatos stun No. 3...

    The 13th nationally ranked New Mexico Highlands University rugby club upset No. 3 Denver University this past weekend 27-12, remaining unbeaten for the fall at 6-0.

    According to head coach P.J. Trujillo, it’s the first league defeat for the Denver Pioneers in three years and gives the Vatos sole possession of first place in the Frontier League.

    The physical play of the Vatos was evident throughout the entire game as the Vatos took an early lead and defended well.

  • State meet is Saturday

    Robertson’s girls and West Las Vegas’ boys, as well as several individual runners from the area, will be among those contending in this weekend’s state championship meet in Rio Rancho.

    The meet gets under way at 9:15 a.m. with races in all classifications and will run through the early afternoon at Rio Rancho High School.

    As the district runner-up on the girls’ side, the Lady Cardinals qualified for state as a team. So did the third-place Dons on the boys’ side. Top three teams make the field.

  • State quest begins for ‘Beastie...

    Thursday’s state girls’ soccer quarterfinal between No. 3 seed Robertson and No. 6 Socorro figures to be a competitive matchup of a couple of veteran contenders with prolific offenses backed up by stingy defenses.

    Game time is 11:15 a.m. Thursday at the Albuquerque Public Schools Soccer Complex, Field No. 3.

    The teams have met before this fall. Robertson won a 3-2 nailbiter on Sept. 20 in Socorro, breaking a 1-1 halftime tie by outscoring the Lady Warriors 2-1 over the final 40 minutes.

  • WLV alumni shine for Cowgirls

    Former West Las Vegas star point guard Miranda Martinez scored a team-high 14 points in her collegiate debut for New Mexico Highlands Monday night in Flagstaff, Ariz.

    Poor shooting and a rebounding disparity sank the Cowgirls’ upset bid as NCAA Division I Northern Arizona defeated Highlands 84-53.

    The exhibition game was the first of the season for both schools.

  • RMAC soccer tourney: NMHU hosts...

    To reach the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women’s soccer semifinals, Highlands will have to do something it hasn’t been able to do in two previous tries this fall -- beat Fort Lewis.

    The Cowgirls (10-4-4 overall, 7-3-4 RMAC) are the No. 4 seed and host No. 5 FLC at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Perkins Stadium.
