    A near-capacity crowd jammed the Frank Herrera Complex for the annual East-West football game on Nov. 8.

    Visiting Robertson, the defending state champion and No. 1 ranked team in Class 4A, completed an undefeated regular season and clinched the district title with a 41-0 win.

    Joseph Paul Griego rushed for three touchdowns, Dominic Lucero ran for two and Marcelo Cedillo scored one for Leroy Gonzalez’s Cardinals (10-0).

    West Las Vegas finished 3-7 in Adrian Gonzales’ first season at the helm.

    Highlands men’s cross country freshman Raymond Tanui has been named the Subway Eat Fresh Student-Athlete of the Week.

    Subway manager Regina Denardo and NMHU announced the selection on Monday.
    Tanui finished 21st at the 2014 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships to earn all-conference honors. He helped the men’s cross country team finish seventh and will be counted on in the regional meet Nov. 22 in Denver.
    Tanui is a native of El Doret, Kenya.

    The Cowgirls took a 2-1 lead and had match point in set four, but the Mountaineers rallied and took the fifth set easily as the New Mexico Highlands volleyball team lost its season finale to Western State 21-25, 25-20, 23-25, 30-28, 15-4 Saturday night in Gunnison, Colo.

    Highlands finished 11-18 overall and 5-13 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

    The host Mountaineers (2-16, 2-13) overcame the match point with a kill, an ace and a bad set by Highlands in game four, tying the match and sending it to the decisive fifth.

  • Marquez grapples to title for...

    The New Mexico Highlands wrestling team had two grapplers place when they competed at the Cowboy Open at the University of Wyoming this past Saturday in Laramie.

    In his first competition of the season, redshirt sophomore Cody Marquez swept through the amateur bracket at heavyweight to claim the title.

    It took all of 52 seconds for Marquez to pick up six points with a pin of Alexis Garcia of Great Falls.
