  • Stu Clark Special - St. Pius...

West Las Vegas’ shooting touch went cold at the most inopportune time Sunday night, and it cost the Dons what would’ve been a record 16th Stu Clark championship.

The cold spell afflicted Robertson as well in a spirited battle with Bernalillo for third place.

The 61st annual Stu Clark Tournament wrapped its three-day run at New Mexico Highlands University’s Wilson Complex.

  • Playoffs all set in NFL

    The Associated Press

The Baltimore Ravens are back in the playoffs, while the Seattle Seahawks will be playing at home in them.

Baltimore made the postseason in the first five years with John Harbaugh as coach and Joe Flacco at quarterback, winning the 2012 championship. They failed to get in last season, but a 20-10 victory Sunday, combined with San Diego’s 19-7 loss at Kansas City, did the trick.

    Saturday

  • Dons, Sartans make final

With both teams hoping for deep tournament runs come March, West Las Vegas and St. Pius X certainly got a warm-up in December.

The hometown Dons and Albuquerque-based Sartans earned positions in the 61st annual Stu Clark Tournament championship game Sunday night at New Mexico Highlands University’s Wilson Complex. (For complete coverage of Sunday’s action, please see Wednesday’s Optic.)

  • Rangers to face Lions for title

    Las Vegas Optic

The Mora Rangers outlasted Escalante 66-57 on Saturday night in the semifinals of the Tri-City Tournament held in Santa Rosa over the weekend.

Mora will play the host Lions in the championship game at 6:30 p.m. on Monday.

The Rangers opened by outscoring the Lobos 15-9 in the first quarter and took a 34-21 lead to the locker room at half.

Escalante trailed 54-36 going into the fourth and rallied enough to cut the deficit in half before running out of time.

  • Lady Dons rout McCurdy

    Las Vegas Optic

Part two of the Valley tour was another smash success for West Las Vegas.

The Lady Dons varsity crushed visiting McCurdy 62-20 on Saturday afternoon. The game was played at the Valley Middle School gym as part of West’s outreach effort that also included a boys’ basketball doubleheader earlier this month (the varsity beat Wagon Mound and JV beat Roy).

West did not allow a field goal in the first quarter Saturday in dashing to a 22-1 lead. It was 34-5 at halftime and 50-12 at the end of the third quarter.
