  • Dons crush Ruidoso by 49 points

The main question for West Las Vegas’ boys going into Monday’s makeup game with Ruidoso was how fatigued they might be, playing their fourth game in five days.

The answer? Not enough for the Warriors’ liking.

West broke a 17-17 tie with 24 consecutive points and held Ruidoso to six points in the second quarter en route to a 93-44 rout at Gillie Lopez Gym.

  • Five for fighting

Robertson’s Rico Montoya, Diego Trujillo and Bubba Okundaye, West Las Vegas’ Sal Lopez and Pecos’ Nathaniel Ortiz each captured individual championships over the weekend in a strong showing for area wrestling teams.

The Cardinals placed five in the finals of the Joe Vivian Classic, long regarded as the premier regular-season tournament in New Mexico, and finished fourth as a team. The tourney  was hosted at Cibola in Albuquerque.

  • Good start for HU track

    NMHU Sports Information

LUBBOCK, Texas — The New Mexico Highlands women’s track and field team, ranked ninth in the country, finished a successful opening weekend at the Texas Tech Open with eight NCAA qualifiers and a win from senior Elizabeth Robertson in the weight throw.

“This was a good opening meet. We had some very good performances and we also had an opportunity to assess what we have to work on,” head coach Bob DeVries explained.

  • Hope-WLV: Clash of the Titans

If Saturday night’s marquee matchup between No. 1 Hope Christian and No. 2 West Las Vegas is any indication of things to come, this March’s state tournament should be a treat.

The Huskies prevailed 73-68 in the championship game of Hope’s three-day boys’ tourney in Albuquerque.

The two teams battled to a 17-all stalemate after one period, with Hope pulling ahead 31-28 by halftime. It was 48-42 going into the final period.

Jordan Leake led the defending champs with 24 points. Dedric Milford had 22.

  • Shorthanded Lady Cards find a way

With a sideline that bore a strong resemblance to a MASH unit, the Robertson girls’ basketball team needed a big game out of the healthy players it had available Thursday night against visiting Bernalillo.

    It got that.

  • LV wrestlers take titles

This time, Rico had some company.

Robertson senior Rico Montoya on Saturday night added to his collection of championship hardware with a 138-pound weight class title at the Joe Vivian Classic.

Montoya (31-0) pinned Isaac Lopez of Rio Grande at the 5:01 mark for his fifth fall in as many matches over the two-day event, held at Albuquerque’s Cibola High School.

Teammate Diego Trujillo joined him in victory, taking the title at 170 with a 4-3 thriller against Manzano’s Travis Decker.

  • Buzzer beater lifts Cowboys

    Las Vegas Optic

Highlands’ Jonathon Mines racked up 27 points Friday night, but none were sweeter than the last three.

Mines’ 3-pointer with 0.9 on the clock lifted the Cowboys past visiting Chadron State 98-95 for NMHU’s second victory of the winter under Craig Snow.

Kendrick Nichols led all players with 30 points. Ricky Norris had 15 points, 10 boards, three assists.
