  • Cowgirls end skid, trap Grizzlies

    Jenny Johnson drained five 3-point baskets and led all scorers with 17 points to lead New Mexico Highlands to a 67-60 win in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women’s basketball action Friday evening at the Wilson Complex.

    The Cowgirls’ win snapped a nine-game losing streak. They hadn’t won since Dec. 20.

    Highlands led throughout, holding the Grizzlies to 33 percent shooting while managing a 40 percent clip.

    Seniors Colby Wilmer and Matthew Chavez began the year with a career day while Jesus Caporal made an immediate impression at the plate, but the New Mexico Highlands baseball team (0-1) lost to Lubbock Christian (4-0) 23-13 Friday afternoon in Lubbock, Texas.

    It was Shannon Hunt’s debut as NMHU head coach.

  • ‘Caro’ in Hall of Fame

    West Las Vegas High School’s Leroy “Caro” Armijo has been a cross country and track and field coach for a long time.

    Just don’t ask him how long.

    Candid on many other subjects, Armijo turned sheepish when asked for specific dates and years he started this or that.

    “You won’t get a straight answer on that one,” he said. “It’s been quite a while.”

  • McPherson earns national acclaim

    It is not often a student wins even one national athlete of the week award in their collegiate career.

    Only a sophomore, Shanice McPherson can claim two.

    Announced Tuesday by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, McPherson was named the NCAA Division II Female Athlete of the Week.

    She captured the award as a freshman on Jan. 27, 2014, and went on to win the 2014 Indoor NCAA Division II Indoor Long Jump Championship.

  • Hargrave wins, but Cowboys fall...

    Senior Easton Hargrave recorded the second period pin, but the New Mexico Highlands wrestling team (8-5, 1-3 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) lost to Colorado State-Pueblo (8-7, 3-3 RMAC) Tuesday night in Pueblo, Colo.

    Hargrave forced the action early for the Cowboys, getting the first period takedown and his opponent, Riley Argyle, was dinged for stalling. Hargrave was then taken down in the second period, but an escape and then his takedown of Argyle led to the fall in 4:37.

  • LV boys drop 2-4A openers

    When they face each other Friday night, West Las Vegas and Robertson boys’ basketball teams will try to reverse course after losing their district openers Wednesday.

    Robertson faded late in a 47-38 defeat to visiting Pojoaque Valley, while West’s fourth-period comeback fell short at Taos in a 76-74 setback.

  • Steroids test slams Silva

    LOS ANGELES — Former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva has tested positive for steroid use.

    Silva, the 39-year-old Brazilian widely considered the greatest mixed martial artist in the young sport’s history, tested positive for Drostanolone metabolites and another steroid in an out-of-competition test Jan. 9.

    Nick Diaz, his opponent at UFC 183 last Saturday, also tested positive for elevated levels of marijuana metabolites in results released Tuesday night by the Nevada Athletic Commission.
