    Catches of the week
    Conchas Lake: Tommy Herrera, age 7, of Las Vegas, caught and release a largemouth bass Mar. 25. He was using a 3-inch chartreuse grub.

  • Summer softball meeting Monday

    A summer softball league coaches’ meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, April 9, at the Abe Montoya Recreation Center.

    Roster forms will be handed out, and there will be a discussion on league rules, as well as the starting date for the season.

    Participants are asked to bring any question, suggestions, ideas and concerns.

    Not much rest is in store for the West Las Vegas cheer squad.

    With the confetti still settling after the team captured its third Class 1A-4A state championship in co-ed cheer, coaches and cheerleaders are looking ahead.

    Head coach Isabel Cavazos said she and her staff will be getting organized in advance of a productive offseason that will include camps and other activities such as fundraising. Tryouts will be coming up in late April or early May.

    West Las Vegas softball posted its best weekend to date, opening district play by sweeping St. Michael’s 13-4 and 12-3 in Santa Fe.

    With wins in three of their last four games, the Lady Dons are off to a 6-5 start.

    St. Mike’s led 4-2 through the first three innings in game one, scoring all four in the third with the help of errors.

  • College roundup: Madrid,...

    Desiree Madrid belted an inside-the-park home run that dropped out of reach just inside the left-field line, and — with the game having been tied 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth — it was a walk-off winner for host New Mexico Highlands, driving in three runs for a 5-2 triumph.

    The win completed a doubleheader sweep for the Cowgirls against Black Hills State (S.D.) on Friday afternoon at Cowgirl Field. It was just the second time this season Highlands has won consecutive games and the first since the team swept Eastern New Mexico on March 6.

  • Villanova, Notre Dame take titles

    Villanova has its second national championship in three years after a 79-62 victory over Michigan on Monday night in San Antonio, Texas.

    The Wildcats went 31 years between their first title in 1985 and their second one two years ago in Houston. Coach Jay Wright and Villanova didn’t have to wait very long for another one.

    The New Mexico High School Coaches Association has announced its all-state and North-South honorees for the recently concluded prepbasketball season.

    North-South eligibility is limited to members of each year’s graduating class, while all-state selection is open to all classes.
