  • Mora captures first state...

ALBUQUERQUE -- For the first time in school history, Mora is state champion in baseball.

The Rangers (19-4) knocked off No. 1 seed Mesilla Valley Christian 12-2 in five innings Friday morning at Isotopes Park to capture the Class 1A-2A title.

  • State track: Coca sweeps...

ALBUQUERQUE -- Miguel Coca has become Citizen Coca.

As the West Las Vegas senior celebrated his third first-place medal in this past weekend’s state track and field championships, he paid tribute to his hometown.

“My senior year,” he said, “I had to represent West Las Vegas – and Las Vegas,” using his thumbs to hook either side of his jersey so the “Dons” name stuck out like the “S” on Superman’s uniform. “Both West and Robertson, we tried to represent Las Vegas. We did what we could.”

  • State champs! Mora takes title

ALBUQUERQUE — For the first time in school history, Mora is state champion in baseball.

The Rangers (19-4) knocked off No. 1 seed Mesilla Valley Christian 12-2 in five innings Friday morning at Isotopes Park to capture the Class 1A-2A title.

Mora’s win made it official — there’s room for more than just basketball in the hoops-happy community. In truth, others have made that statement in recent times. Natalia Marrujo, now competing at NMHU, won an individual state cross country championship two years ago.

  • State baseball: Cards ousted by...

    Remember the Spartans?

Robertson's baseball team does, and it's a bad memory.

For the second year in a row, Bernalillo was responsible for ending the Cardinals' postseason. The No. 6 seeded Spartans beat No. 3 RHS 6-2 in the Class 4A quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon at Rio Rancho High.

In 2017, Bernalillo edged Robertson two games to one in the state tournament's first round.

The upset ended a remarkable season for the Redbirds, who won 23 out of 28 games, clinched the District 2-4A title and held the No. 1 ranking in 4A for a time.

  • State baseball: Mora reaches 1A-...

Mora will play for a state baseball title at 9 a.m. Friday at Isotopes Park in Albuquerque.

The opponent is top-ranked Mesilla Valley Christian, which bounced Gateway Christian 14-4 in a Thursday semifinal at Rio Rancho's Cleveland High.

The Rangers defeated Jemez Valley 11-3 in another Thursday semifinal at Cleveland. Kenny Martinez earned the pitching win.

Lefonso Castillo drew first blood for Mora when Jemez botched a play with two outs in the Ranger half of the second inning.

Jemez tied it when Josh Loretta made it home on a groundout after getting on with a walk.

  • State softball: Robertson...

Robertson's dream of a state softball championship came to an end Thursday in Rio Rancho, as No. 3 seeded Cobre edged the No. 4 seed Lady Cardinals 5-4 in an elimination game.

The Lady Cards, who received a first-round bye and won their state opener by beating No. 5 Santa Fe Indian 11-2 Wednesday, lost to No. 1 Silver by a 9-0 tally early Thursday.

Cobre scored in the sixth inning to pull ahead and held on for the one-run win, advancing to meet Portales in the playback bracket. It was the Indians' third win over Robertson in as many meetings this spring.

But the will to win and the drive to become a more disciplined, focused runner have evolved over time.

The West Las Vegas senior — who concluded his high school athletic career with the Class 4A-6A state track and field championships this past weekend in Albuquerque — has taken the next step in that evolution by signing with Iowa Central Community College.
