  • THUMBS DOWN: SO MUCH WINNING
Mayor Tonita Gurulé-Giron had more than enough time, within state statute, to plan an organizational meeting, and, according to the 2010 City Charter, could have held the meeting at Wednesday’s work session. Instead, the mayor chose to schedule a meeting on a Friday evening, when three councilors had already made plans to go out of town, and then blamed the councilors for not attending.

  • THUMBS UP: DOCUMENT THE EVIDENCE
Dozens of San Miguel and Mora county residents call the Optic each month with reports of perceived or suspected government wrongdoing. David G. Romero not only took matters into his own hands, he began a paper trail of documentation that he wasn’t even required to compile.

  • THUMBS UP: PRAISE COPS FOR DEFUSING
Sunday’s Optic featured a story, based on police reports and court documents, about a man who was armed with a knife who was taken into custody. Despite the suspect continuing to reach behind his back as he ignored a Las Vegas Police officer’s commands and walked toward the officer, who drew his weapon, the suspect was taken into custody without any shots fired or any apparent major injury to anyone.

  • THUMBS DOWN: COMMUNICATE, DON’T REPLICATE
Three wonderful, important, family-oriented cultural opportunities are all scheduled to happen between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 22.  They all deserve a thumb UP, but the fact that they are scheduled at the same time — more or less — on the same day, drives some folks crazy.

  • THUMBS DOWN: WHAT BALLOONS REPRESENT
To some, balloons represent flying to the heavens — a way to honor those no longer with us. To others, it’s merely a way to symbolize a happy event or celebration, and florists and gift shops recognize this.
However, Sunday afternoon, balloons represented an enemy of the local electrical grid. PNM said balloons were the cause a of a power outage that affected about 2,000 customers in Las Vegas and the surrounding area to the north.

  • THUMBS DOWN: SLOW DOWN FOR PILGRIMAGE
Folks who’ve lived in New Mexico their entire lives know there are pilgrimages in the spring. Whether it’s the walk to Chimayo or one of the more local pilgrimages, even the drivers who know the least about the specific tradition know there are walkers by the side of local roads during Holy Week, and that these walkers require driving slower and more caution than usual.
