  • THUMBS UP: THE DOCTOR IS IN

We’re happy Tracy Wilkerson, D.O., has decided to see patients in Las Vegas. The growth of our medical community, both in terms of specialists and internal medicine / general practice doctors and nurse practitioners, at San Miguel or Mora facilities, is a big key to population growth.

  • THE HEAT AND THE OTHER HEAT

Plenty of folks have documented the difficulties and dangers of fighting wildfires. This month, we’ve seen, not far away in Colfax County, and in other parts of New Mexico and in Colorado, the courage and organization needed to save homes and history.

  • THUMBS UP: MR. HOUDEK’S OPUS

If Jeff Houdek had decided not to speak at Robertson High School’s recent graduation ceremony — the first to take place since the tragic passing of his wife — we all would have completely supported his choice. We also support his courage to speak, and it reminded us how important it is to work together.

Lacy Houdek was the medical care provider of choice for the editor of this newspaper as well as many, many others in the community. She reminded us preventive care is a group effort.

  • THUMBS UP: COMMUNICATION IMPROVEMENT
Not only has Virginia Marrujo worn many hats for the City of Las Vegas this sporing, one of those hats is Fiestas coordinator, which includes helping arrange vendor placements along Bridge Street.

Some businesses close during the six-day event (a six-day Fiestas seems a bit long for Las Vegas these days); others remain open.

  • Letters addressing candidates for any New Mexico office in the June 5 primary election must be received by the Optic by Wednesday, May 30, 5 p.m.

Letters received after this time will be published after the June 5 election.

  • THUMBS DOWN: HIRE QUALIFIED CITY STAFF, QUICKLY

Las Vegas Mayor Tonita Gurulé-Girón seemed to have a point in delaying the appointment of permanent replacements for the city directors after several vacancies arose within the past six months. However, those delays were only meant to take into account Council seat changes from the March 6 election.

  • THUMBS UP: MORA MOMENTUM?
After Jarrod Duran caught the final out of Friday’s 12-2 win over No. 1 seed Mesilla Valley Christian, he ran toward the Isotopes Park infield to celebrate with his state-champion Mora Ranger teammates.

Hopefully, Mora’s first state title in baseball is a sign of more impressive non-sports accomplishments in the years ahead.
Mora’s love for hoops is well-known, and its cross country and volleyball success, coupled with baseball, show both a fighting spirit and a knowledge of the game.
