    No confidence

I want to have on public record a vote of no confidence in San Miguel County Manager Vidal Martinez by the people of the county.

We have witnessed, and have evidence of, several violations of the Open Meetings Act, overstepping his authority in relation to elected and appointed commissioners making decisions contrary to unanimous County Commission resolutions, exhibiting non-transparency, favoritism and ignoring the voices of the county.

    THUMBS DOWN: COMMUNICATE, DON’T REPLICATE
Three wonderful, important, family-oriented cultural opportunities are all scheduled to happen between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 22.  They all deserve a thumb UP, but the fact that they are scheduled at the same time — more or less — on the same day, drives some folks crazy.

  • Enveloped by drought and short-sightedness

Oh, what a difference a year makes.

Last year, the U.S. Drought Monitor map showed about half of New Mexico was in an “abnormally dry” condition, with only a tiny portion in the northeastern corner of the state actuall suffering from “moderate drought.”

Now, that little corner of the state is suffering from “extreme” or “exceptional” drought conditions while most of the rest of the state is now in “severe” or “extreme” drought.

  • A loud pop delays the show

Just when I thought it was safe to close the chapter on the George Gershwin/Cole Porter performance by the Highlands University Choir at Ilfeld Auditorium, along comes another aspect of the performance.

Last week’s column covered the unexpected power failure in that historic building. Those several minutes left the auditorium in darkness, except for the handful of illuminated “exit” signs throughout the building.

  • Please vote on Tuesday

Think of the people in your life who tell you that they don’t vote; that votes don’t matter, every election is pre-determined, folks behind  the scenes have arranged it all.

Notice how often crucial elections are decided by a handful of votes. “I didn’t make it to the polls this time” is a common excuse people give for staying away from the voting booth.
