Alta Vista needs to keep good doctors

This letter is in reference to the article in the Optic about Alta Vista Hospital’s staffing shortage.

I recently had a follow-up with my Ob/Gyn doctor, and I was very disheartened to learn from my doctor that he would no longer be in Las Vegas, working with Alta Vista Hospital due to the fact that the hospital had refused to renew his contract.

My question to you, Mrs. Leyba of Alta Vista Hospital, is why do you refuse to renew contracts to the doctors that care for their patients?

    D-Day should be commemorated
With the passing of time, it seems we forget all too swiftly one of the  greatest events in history. This event  just passed without even so much as a whimper.  To correct that  flaw for next year, I am suggesting that the Chamber of Commerce, the EDC, Las Vegas First, and any other civic-minded organization in this community, including the veterans, the VFW, the American Legion, come together to celebrate D-Day and its profound impact on the world.

New Mora schools chief a good man
A relative of a school board member in Mora County has been named as the new superintendent, and some people are unhappy, (calling it) “nepotism” ... .
As far back as I can remember only the relatives and friends of elected officials are appointed good paying jobs.
I was a two-term county commissioner. My last term in office I hired the aunt of one other commissioner as county manager. The night of the meeting, the people at the county commission meeting went wild.

    The enemy within
Tell me it isn’t so! Powerful Catholics in the New Mexico Senate are not pro-life as their church teaches. Maybe, just maybe, late-term abortion is legal in New Mexico because of Catholics!
Yes, that’s right; our representatives like Sen. Gerald Ortiz y Pino (D-Bernalillo) proudly defeated House Bill 390 regarding a ban on late-term abortion.

Natives are left holding the bag
Notice how easy it is to back out of parking spots at Spic and Span. You can now cross Grand Avenue without much strain. These are some of the “benefits” gleaned from our city and county father’s hiring practices — there aren’t too many people remaining in our fair city.

Our city and county representatives hire recycled employees or out-of-towners, who are here for their vested interests, and the area’s economy can go to hell.

    Teacher evaluations
I read with interest Joe McCaffrey’s column on teacher evaluations in the April 10 Optic, and Ed Littleton’s Letter to the Editor on May 1.

Having done many employee evaluations in a much-prescribed federal system, I’d like to add my two cents, but first an analogy.

Driving drunk not worth the cost
The San Miguel County DWI Program is collaborating with many agencies to ensure a safe prom and graduation season.
Staff will be helping out at local proms, ensuring that no one who has been drinking alcohol is admitted.
Local law enforcement will be conducting saturation patrols, Sobriety Checkpoints, and Underage Drinking Enforcement activities. If you drink and drive, you will get caught!
