    Firefighting funds diverted to Spaceport

In the future when New Mexico citizens need help from their local fire departments, they should call Spaceport New Mexico instead of 911.

If that doesn’t work, try calling your state representative or senator. They, in their great wisdom, transferred $1.2 million from the Fire Protection Fund Grant Program to Spaceport New Mexico in this year’s legislative appropriations bill.

An endorsement for Barbara Perea Casey

On behalf of ADELANTE and the American Association of University Women, we would like to thank all of the mayoral and city council candidates for their participation in the recent forums.  We must also thank New Mexico Highlands University for loaning us the use of the Student Center for holding our forums.  Thanks also go to the Optic and of course to all the citizens who attended.

    Las Vegans helping Las Vegans

Many of us find ourselves beset every day by requests for money—through the mail, by email, telephone, on the street, and even in church. While we may know that many of these requests correspond to real, legitimate needs, we know we can’t help everyone who asks. Also, when solicited by large charities, we often wonder where the money goes — will the money we donate help those in need right around us? However, in the case of one local fund-raising effort, Las Vegas has received more than it has given.

    All are outraged

My  letter on the affair of the Trujillo cousins (Optic, Jan. 1) seems to have struck a nerve. Since Kenny Sandoval has resorted to name-calling (Optic, Jan. 10), I feel it necessary to respond. Just to set the record straight, I gladly accept the labels of curmudgeon and negativist. It took me many years to achieve this status.

    Donald Trump selling snake oil

Angry white men are the primary fodder for Trump’s presidential campaign grasping at straws. These men feel that their entitlement has been lost. That is true for them and so many other Americans.

Yet, they are following a man who is selling them snake oil. He wants them to vote Republican, which is how they got where they are in the first place.

City should purchase new police cars
Upon reading about the condition of the city police vehicles, and the safety concerns, I was convinced that, perhaps, a few new ones should be purchased.

    PARCC system is working

Thank goodness the local schools leadership did not take credit for the improved grades in local schools while, on the other hand, blaming the failing or slipping grades on a flawed process. Looks like the PARCC system is being vindicated. If a school is not cutting the mustard, what other label does one use but “failing”?

Why are gas prices here so much higher?

Question, with the falling price of crude oil now below $37, why are pump prices not reflecting a commensurate low locally?

Local prices are well above Albuquerque and even Clayton, a traditionally higher priced area than LV. Most areas adjacent to LV are well below $2; it doesn’t make sense this one area, not so remote is following the trend of California.
