    Let’s get kids to read

Get kids to read during the summer — we’re hearing this message from the recent Optic editorial (May 25), from the Optic’s lead article by the editor “Stopping the Summer Slide” on the Governor’s initiative to “entice” kids to read, and everywhere.

Right here in Las Vegas, the same message is loud and clear:  make sure that all kids have good books to read this summer. And here is an answer.

Winkel guest column right on the money
I applaud the guest column by Carol Winkel in the May 22 edition of the Optic. She is absolutely correct when she proposes changes in school administration and classroom management. In order to create a learning atmosphere it is imperative the classroom be student-centered and not goal- oriented.

Get out of the way of emergency vehicles

I’m not sure if it is a local custom, literally just sheer ignorance or just absolute selfishness, but come on people!

Today I stopped at the end of my road, at 518 and waited for a caravan of vehicles to pass, before then checking to my right again. I immediately noted a state police vehicle coming southbound with lights on.

I waited and then pulled out after the state vehicle. I was able to follow at about 60 mph and watch the disgusting show ahead.

Alta Vista Hospital is doing its best

It seems that most of the time you refer to Alta Vista you add “for profit.” Letters from others and quotes form others also add that comment.

Are you against the idea of a firm attempting to make a profit? From what I can determine you are hired by “for profit newspaper.”

The local hospital has attempted to recruit and keep qualified OB physicians. They do not come and if they do they do not last long.

Vegas has a serious loose-dog problem

I recently returned from Albuquerque’s Run for the Zoo 10K.  It was a great race, but when people ask how my training went, it’s a different response.

    Consolidation is long over due

It’s time to consolidate the two school districts of Las Vegas. It’s long overdue.

    Political cartoon uncalled for

The political cartoon published in the April 20 edition  was unworthy of the Optic, in my opinion.

Stating that the upcoming presidential election consists only of bad choices is cynical enough, and the illustration is even worse. A communist hammer and sickle for Bernie Sanders? Really?

    Doctors, medical services abundant

I am writing in response to Betty Maestas’ Letter to the Editor posted on April 18 regarding the need for “more doctors and medical services needed.”

First and utmost, my condolences to Ms. [Desiree] Castillo’s’ family for their loss. Secondly, Ms. Maestas is mistaken regarding the lack of medical care in Las Vegas.

    Lawmakers should be transparent

President Kennedy once stated: “The very word ‘secrecy’ is repugnant in a free and open society… We decided long ago that the dangers of excessive and unwarranted concealment of pertinent fact far outweighed the dangers which are cited to justify it.”
