The Big White Lie

Unlike an insignificant  “little white lie”, there’s a BIG WHITE LIE afoot that’s very important.

The writer of the July 9 Optic Editorial, accepted “Critical Race Theory” (CRT) as valid, i.e all white people are racist.  Whites are “oppressors” and everyone else are their “victims”.  How offensive is this to people who have never been, and are not, racist?  It’s a big lie about white people.

For definition purposes, “white people” are of the Caucasian race, people who historically populated the area from Spain to Iran, and from Tunisia to Finland, as well as their descendants.

From “Critical race theorists hold that the law and legal institutions in the United States are inherently racist insofar as they function to create and maintain social, economic, and political inequalities between whites and nonwhites, especially African Americans.”  This is called “systemic racism”, like: a City Council or County Commission; State Legislature; Magistrate Court; MVD: and so on.  What CRT proponents would replace these institutions with is anyone’s guess.  Maybe they’d  import some “successful” practices from Cuba or Venezuela.

And, with CRT racial defamation being taught in some state (NM?) schools, what will the future be for your children and grandchildren in 10-15 years?

They’ll live in a confused and contradictory world where in some states people will NOT be judged by the color of their skin, while in others, they will.  When teenagers of the latter states begin to question and rebel against their lower social status as racists, what will happen?  Maybe the powers that be will follow Mao’s example and  create a “Red Guard” to silence them.  Or, maybe like Boss put Cool Hand Luke in the cooler to get “his mind right”, they’ll enroll non-believers in re-education camps.

CRT is the opposite of “ diversity, equity, and inclusion”.  There’s no room for “Brotherly Love” in CRT.  Their goal is to divide Americans and destroy our institutions.  CRT is a big white lie.

Bully by Privilege

Emilio Aragon is a retired Army Officer. He attained a Masters Degree in Sociology from Highlands University, and this year (2021) retired after 35 years as a local businessman. Emilio has published two previous books, “Bridge Street” and “Liberato Amado - The Money Changers Won.” This, his third book, “Bully by Privilege,” was actually researched in Cuba. Emilio journeyed twice to the island, and received fabulous assists from street vendors, book vendors and everyday street people of the beautiful island.

Perhaps the biggest contributing factor to the selection of the topic - The Spanish-American War in Cuba in 1898, was the fact that libraries were bereft of the contributions by Captain Maximiliano Luna. While Camp Luna here in Las Vegas, New Mexico, is named after Captain Luna, little has been written about him. Emilio decided to take on the task.

The biography pits Captain Maximiliano Luna’s exploits vs. those of Theodore Roosevelt. The Rough Riers are showcased and it becomes quite obvious early on, the sobriquet by the Army regulars of “Wood’s Weary Walkers,” was quite appropriate in that the Regiment, led by Colonel Leonard Wood, failed to secure enough Navy transports to include the Regiment’s cavalry mounts - their horses were left behind in Tampa, Florida.

Captain Maximiliano Luna, and the rest of the Rough Riders Regiment, were decommissioned after the 30-day war in Cuba, and Captain Luna rejoined the Army as a Lieutenant to fight in the Philippines. He lost his life crossing the flooded Agno River at the young age of 30. Lieutenant Maximiliano Luna is the first listed on the roster of Rough Riders buried at Arlington Cemetery.

Emilio’s next writing project is a book of short stories.

Unsatisfied with city project progress

I have a question to the City of Las Vegas: How many more projects are you going to start and leave unfinished? I heard the mayor say he wanted to landscape Las Vegas so we would get more tourist trade.Really? Fix the streets first before you go and landscape anything . I have always said no matter how much makeup you put on an ugly person you are still ugly underneath! I just saw this last week, a big fancy truck that says pothole patcher. Really? How much did the city pay for the latest toy? Another thing why is the new street sweeper sweeping the streets that have the biggest potholes.

The park corners, Bridge Street, 8th and National. Since march there have been blue water pipes that the city was supposed to install. It is September. I understand that kind of pipe has a 10-year life if it has been laying out there in the hot sun? They did replace the sewer lines but they were supposed to have finished, but my entrance has been messed up since they started.

Please don’t start any more projects that you aren’t going to finish. I am personally tired of hitting all these potholes. There has to be a better solution. There are always at least 8 to 10 city workers standing around. I have a suggestion. Maybe we need to bring someone from elsewhere to fix this city.

Now I know why everyone is moving away I know I am. All the trees and stuff that they planted there where the sign is by DOT are dead, weeds everywhere! The turn there on Grand was planned very poorly. There is going to be a bad accident. You can’t eve turn in to the trailer park going south on Grand! Well thank you Las Vegas, you did it again. Very sad this town is dying slowly but surely.
