In response to complaints about Plaza outdoor dining
In response to a letter by James Chavez (Sept. 22 edition of the Optic). He states he is unhappy with outdoor dining at the Plaza. He feels private business should not profit from city owned and taxpayer funded property.
I ask, does he feel the same when restaurants on Douglas Ave. do the same and use part of the road, requiring one direction traffic detour between 7th and 8th St.? How about the city owned Plaza Park that hosts the annual fiestas and motorcycle rally? They allow vendors to park on the road around the Plaza, blocked to traffic and taxpayer funded, to sell food or other goods in order to make a profit. Is that not like what’s happening on the Plaza today because of the COVID-19 surge we are in? Perhaps if people would get vaccinated, local business would not have to resort to this action to stay in business.
Many “Plazas” nationwide close or limit traffic and there is no detrimental damage to the city. As for a traffic hazard, I have seen on many occasions, people making the right turn at the Plaza after realizing they went left around the park. Nothing new there.
The proprietors of the food and beverage businesses at the Plaza seem to be the targets of unwarranted attacks. Why? Jealousy? Female owned? Who knows. She pays and treats her employees well.
This town will die if childish pettiness continues.
