Rebecca Lynne Lowe passed from this life early in the morning on Oct. 18 at Christopher House in Austin, Tex.
Despite navigating advanced cancer over the past four years, she remained hopeful and luminous to the end.
Rebecca had long and treasured ties to New Mexico. Her husband Sam was a VISTA Volunteer in the 1970s, and the family took regular camping trips to the NM mountains while their children were growing up. Her daughter Cara applied to Armand Hammer United World College in the 90s; her son Jesse attended St. John’s College in Santa Fe in the 2000s. These connections led to an enthusiastic sharing of delights from the Land of Enchantment over the years, and Rebecca became a fierce believer in Green Chile Therapy. Her last great adventure was fixing up an old adobe casita in West Las Vegas with friends and family.
Rebecca’s legacy is secure in the many young lives she enriched over 27 years as an educator.
She also was instrumental in establishing a scholarship which has helped numerous first-generation college students launch their hopeful futures; last year those scholarships were awarded to sixteen Central Texas youths.
Rebecca was a joy-bringer and is grieved by those many she called family and friends. We will celebrate her at Austin Mennonite Church on her December birthday, and will remember her forever.
