  • Mayor: director positions could be filled next week

    Wednesday evening, Las Vegas' City Council approved some needed infrastructure items to be added to the consent agenda for next week's monthly council meeting. However, it was a brief discussion at the end of Wednesday's work session that covered a topic on the minds of many city residents.

  • Shiny for summer

    Luna Community College’s 14th Annual Car Show, held Saturday on the LCC campus, brought hundreds of visitors to the Las Vegas area.

    Some showgoers, such as Chantel Sedillo, who was looking over this 1969 Camaro, owned by David Archuleta, were able to take advantage of the warm, sunny weather and examine vehicles from many eras.

    Some cars were driven in to the campus on their own, while others — especially mint-condition show cars — were brought to Luna in special trailers.

  • Sullivan pleads guilty in 2016 killing

    A Las Vegas man faces seven to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to killing his onetime friend in the summer of 2016.

    Daniel M. Sullivan, 28, appeared in district court on Monday to accept the agreement, which stipulates that in exchange for pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the death of Steven Marquez, he will serve no more than 10 years behind bars.

    Second-degree murder charges carry a maximum sentence of 15 years, not counting any enhancements.

  • Calculations at the Complex

    After years of hearings, studies, legal motions and long-term interruptions in construction, work has finally resumed on the Mora County Complex.
    Construction crews recently began completing the current phase of construction on the Mora County Complex.

    Last week, after returns showed Paula Garcia’s run for the New Mexico House District 40 seat was going to be unsuccessful, it was natural to revisit one of the main projects Garcia has focused on as Mora County Commission Chairwoman, where she has about six months left in her term.

  • IPRA, OMA training set for Thursday at NMHU Student Union

    Las Vegas Optic reports

    The Office of the Attorney General routinely travels throughout New Mexico offering free training sessions on Sunshine Laws designed to help government agencies, municipalities, the public and the media to better understand the requirements of the state’s Inspection of Public Records Act and Open Meetings Act.

    The training sessions are held regularly around the state and this month’s location is Las Vegas.

  • CYFD event kicks off food program

    The Summer Food Service Program goal for this summer is to organize a kickoff to reach out to the children in the Las Vegas area.

    The Children, Youth and Families Department is holding an SFSP kickoff event for the community of Las Vegas to promote awareness of the program. The event will be held at the Carnegie Library, Wednesday, July 11, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  • Luna dental students double up hours to graduate in spring

    Luna Community College Dental Assistant students made history this past semester.

    Glorianna Baca, Aubrie Chavez, Tabitha Leyba, Kimmeah Martinez, Chantel Rivera, Isaiah Sandoval and Amber Trujillo all took 10 classes instead of a normal five-course load in the spring. Because of their work and dedication, they became official graduates of Luna on May 24.

  • ‘Not the way I heared it’

    I heard it, I saw it, and it’s final. What I heard, for about the millionth time, was the paging from a Walmart clerk, seeking the attention of someone in the “jew LERY” department.

    I stuck around long enough to locate the errant clerk, as it was at my request that the paging took place.
