  • NM poverty figures bleak

    ALBUQUERQUE — A New Mexico children’s advocacy group on Tuesday presented the latest troubling statistics on child poverty, teen birth rates and math and reading proficiency during the first day of the legislative session, hoping to spur action by lawmakers.
    Officials with New Mexico Voices for Children and others gathered at the state Capitol to release the annual New Mexico Kids Count report.

  • Fort Union waives entrance fees on Monday

    Fort Union National Monument will be joining national park sites around the country in celebrating the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday with a fee free day. Entrance fees will be waived for all visitors to Fort Union National Monument on Monday. Visitors arriving in the park will be allowed to enter free of charge.

    “Winter can be a wonderful time to visit Fort Union,” says park Superintendent Charlie Strickfaden. Fee free days are a great opportunity to discover a new season in your favorite national park.”

    Below are some of the government agencies, banks and schools that will be closed on Monday in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
    • City of Las Vegas offices: Closed
    • Trash pickup: There will be no residential trash pickup on Monday. If your regular trash pickup is Monday, your garbage will be hauled away on Tuesday.
    • Abelino Montoya Recreation Center: Open
    • Carnegie Public Library: Closed
    • San Miguel County offices: Closed
    • Mora County offices: Closed

Consider this thumb the result of cautious optimism that the legislative session, which started this week, will be a productive one, with the governor keeping a tight grip on spending while lawmakers make good decisions that benefit New Mexicans. With Congress as an example of how not to govern, we’re hoping to see the betterment of the state trumping partisan politics —but that will be up to the players in Santa Fe.
