  • Cardinals’ Baca shines in Combine

    Las Vegas’ Mathew Baca, 14, earned rave reviews in the recent Schuman’s National Underclassmen Combine held in Farmington.

    National Underclassmen Combine is a football competition where athletes showcase their football skills and talents in such activities as the 40-yard dash, shuttle, broad jump, vertical jump, jump reach, standing reach, and bench reps.

    The athletes are also tested on their position-specific football skills and knowledge. They are then ranked by former NFL players and college coaches.

  • West rocks its own meet

    Individual victories in six events and solid performances elsewhere helped the West Las Vegas girls’ track and field squad secure a team championship this past weekend at the Herrera Complex.

    The Lady Dons and Robertson’s Lady Cardinals finished one-two in the girls’ standings, edging St. Mike’s.

    On the boys’ side, the host Dons were a runner-up to the Horsemen.

  • Jones gets spotlight at Roundhouse

    SANTA FE  — NMHU baseball head coach Steve Jones was recently recognized by the New Mexico State Senate for eclipsing the 500 career wins milestone this season.  

    Jones is currently in his 16th season at the helm of the Cowboys.  

  • Omaha tops Isotopes

    Scott Van Slyke belted two home runs. Dodgers pitcher Ted Lilly made a rehab start on the mound.

    Still, the visiting Omaha Storm Chasers prevailed 6-3 Wednesday night, sweeping a doubleheader from the Albuquerque Isotopes.

    Albuquerque fell to 4-3, having lost three of four to follow a 3-0 start, all at home.

    Van Slyke, who leads the ‘Topes in hitting (.625, 15 hits) and home runs (four), went 2 for 3 in the nightcap but the rest of the team combined for just three hits.

  • Go Fish - April 12, 2013

    April 9:
    Charette Lakes: Fishing was slow but there were a few trout taken by anglers using Power Bait and salmon eggs.
    Conchas Lake: Bank fishing was fair using grubs, nightcrawlers and spinners for walleye. A few black bass were caught by anglers using spinner baits and jerk baits. Fishing was fair using stink bait and liver for catfish.
    Coyote Creek: No reports.

  • Another tragedy - Families thought girls were at slumber party

    A fateful drive took the lives of two middle school students early Saturday morning, but their spirit, energy and spunk live on in the memories of their families.

    Kayla Martinez, 14, and Aleandra ”Aly” Sanchez were two of the eight people crammed into a four-door silver Infiniti sedan when the car rolled over into a median on I-25 near Tecolote around 2 a.m. on Saturday. The sedan landed on its roof, and all eight occupants were ejected.

    Police say alcohol, speed and reckless driving were all factors in the crash.

  • Teen may be charged as an adult

    District Attorney Richard Flores is considering whether to try as an adult the teenage driver who allegedly left the scene of an alcohol-related crash near Tecolote early Saturday morning that left two dead and six injured.

    If Wayne Lovato, 17, of the 2400 block of Calle Bonita in Las Vegas, is tried as an adult and convicted of abuse of a child resulting in death and great bodily harm charges stemming from the case, he could face “significant” prison time , 4th Judicial District Attorney Richard Flores said.
