    “I just heard a big roar and trees breaking,” the owner of Michael’s Precision Automotive at 514 S. Commerce St. said.

  • Man booked for fifth DWI

    A 58-year-old Ribera Man was arrested earlier this month for driving drunk for the fifth time, according to state police.
    Court documents filed last week identify the driver has Louie J. Rivera, who resides on Highway 3 Curruco Road.

    Rivera was arrested on Aug. 2 and appears to have been released on bond from the San Miguel County Detention Center three days later. Online court records state that his bond was set at $1,000.

    When West Las Vegas students return to school next Monday they will see several changes. Some will be returning to the newly remodeled Union Street Elementary, and at the high school students will by trying out something called  5X5 Block Scheduling.

    Monday, Aug. 12 — The Las Vegas Airport recorded 1.04 inches of precipitation Saturday and Sunday while Fritz Broeske’s rain gauge in the Gallinas Canyon registered over two inches. The high yesterday was 79, the low last night 54, and the noontime reading 74. The forecast is for more afternoon and evening thunderstorms and thundershowers. Weekend rains drenched all sections of New Mexico and more showers were forecast for Monday.

    Congressman Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico’s Third District announced last week that cities across northern New Mexico are receiving federal funds through the Department of Housing and Urban Development to support public housing projects. Among the recipients is the city of Las Vegas Housing Authority, which will get $410,791.

  • Jury selection wraps up in murder case

    ALBUQUERQUE — After nearly three weeks of questioning dozens of potential jurors, prosecutors and defense attorneys on Thursday chose nine women and three men to hear the case of an Arizona inmate who escaped from prison and is accused of killing a retired couple who was traveling through New Mexico.
    John McCluskey is the last defendant to face federal carjacking and murder charges in the 2010 deaths of Gary and Linda Haas of Tecumseh, Okla.
