  • East board: No contract extension for super

    Evidence of the strained relationship between the Las Vegas City Schools Board and Superintendent Sheryl McNellis-Martinez was on full display last Friday. The board voted unanimously against her request for a contract extension during a special board meeting.

    Additionally, board member Luis Ortiz complained that classes at Los Niños Elementary are overloaded, and as a result  his third-grade son began attending school at a West Las Vegas elementary.

    People who meet Lorenzo Flores tend to have a strong reaction to him.

    Many look up to him as a fearless advocate who isn’t afraid to fight for the little guy, even if it means taking on those in power. Others view him as little more than a misguided agitator hell- bent on stirring up trouble.

    Whatever one’s view of the 56-year-old activist might be, it’s clear that he isn’t afraid to fight for what he believes in.

  • Game and Fish probing elk deaths

    The state Game and Fish Department suspects that a virus might be responsible for the deaths of more than 100 elk just north of Las Vegas.

    The carcasses were discovered Tuesday within a half- to three-quarter mile area of Game Management Unit 46. The elk appear to have died within a 24 hour period.
