  • Fundraiser honoring Vegas native Sunday

    The Third Annual Lung Cancer Bike Ride honoring the memory of Las Vegas native Annette Leger will take place on Sunday along the Rio Grande Bosque Bike Path.

    The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque.

    Proceeds support programs dedicated to doubling lung cancer survival by 2022.

  • Boy died from ‘blunt trauma’

    An Albuquerque boy allegedly kicked to death by his mother last year had injuries over much of his body and died from “blunt trauma.”

    Details of Omaree Varela’s death were included in an autopsy report released Tuesday to the Albuquerque Journal.

    The boy’s mother, Synthia Varela-Casaus, has pleaded not guilty to more than 20 charges related to the boy’s death. She has been in jail on a $100,000 bond since her arrest in December.

    Monday, March 30 — Stewart Chamberlain has been named assistant station manager at Radio Station KFUN in Las Vegas. Mrs. Dorothy Thwaites will continue as station manager. Chamberlain, who formerly worked at radio stations in Gallup and Farmington and comes to Las Vegas from Albuquerque, took over at KFUN last Monday.

    Police plan DWI checkpoints
    New Mexico State Police will be conducting DWI checkpoints in San Miguel and Mora counties during the next two weeks.
    According to Sgt. Leonard Arias of the New Mexico State Police, Dist. 2, several DWI saturation patrols will be conducted.

  • Scholar, Highlands students to strike a pose on the Plaza today

    New Mexico Highlands University media arts students are working closely with visiting professor and artist Yolanda Domínguez of Spain to develop performance art pieces they will perform around Las Vegas today (Friday) and April 4.

    Domínguez is a well-known  visual and performance artist and social activist who is teaching at Highlands for two weeks, thanks to the university’s Ballen Visiting Scholar Program.

  • Luna students among scholarship recipients

    Fourteen Northern New Mexicans have received $1,000 Returning Student/Regional College scholarships from the Los Alamos National Laboratory Employees’ Scholarship Fund.

    These awards help students returning to a formal education for certification or a two-year degree at an accredited regional college. Many of the students receiving these awards are pursuing new careers.
