    A recent letter to the editor in the New Mexican (the Santa Fe daily paper) by Georgia Snead caught my eye. I have known Georgia and her family for a very long time and yes, she is closely related to our famed writers, S. Omar and Elliot Barker. She wonders why Omar Barker was left out of a collection written by Walter Skold, titled “Reviving Dead Poets.”

    The Pritzlaff Ranch is a 3,300-acre spread located north of Las Vegas. The ranch has been managed with wildlife conservation as its groundwork through the Biophilia Foundation. This foundation is premised on the belief that through private landowner’s efforts to restore and protect natural resources our countries lands will become healthy and sustainable ecosystems.

    NEW YORK — President Barack Obama praised the new Sept. 11 museum on Thursday as “a sacred place of healing and of hope” that captures both the story and the spirit of heroism and helpfulness that followed the attacks.

  • CHAMPIONS! Robertson girls’ tennis finishes year on top

    Having won state as a player a few years back, Roman Fulgenzi got to experience the championship glory from a coach’s perspective this past week.

    Robertson’s girls’ tennis team rose to the occasion in capturing the program’s second Class 1A-3A state championship, the first having come in 2011 under the direction of Juan Carlos Fulgenzi, who also helped his younger brother coach this group. In doing so, the Lady Cardinals upset No. 1 seed Bosque, which had swept Taos and Hope Christian en route to the final.

  • Quintana 4th in state golf tourney

    West Las Vegas’ Joedy Quintana finished fourth in the state golf tournament for Class 1A-3A girls on Tuesday after making a strong surge on the second day of the event, held at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces.

    Quintana tied for fourth with a two-day total of 160. She was in eighth place at the end of the day Monday, having shot an 82. But she came back with a round of 78 — the fourth-best overall on Tuesday — to tie Mia Salome of Socorro for fourth place in the tourney.

  • Train Robbers make return

    They’re ba-aa-ack.

    Las Vegas Train Robbers opened their second season on the road this past week with a series at Alpine, Texas. And the team plays the first of a four-night set Sunday at Roswell.

    The Robbers are one of the younger teams in the Pecos League, a semiprofessional baseball organization that includes teams in New Mexico, southern Colorado, Texas and — new in 2014 — eastern Arizona.

    Fishing report, May 13:
    Charette Lakes: Trout fishing was fair to good using Power Bait, Pistol Petes and worms. We had no report on perch.
    Cimarron River: Stream flow below Eagle Nest on Monday was 15 cfs. Trout fishing was fair to good using parachute adams, wooly buggers, worms and small mayfly nymphs. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was fair using salmon eggs, Pistol Petes, spinners and black wooly buggers.
