  • Best Historic Day Trip - Vegas to be featured in TV show

    Normally when one sees Las Vegas on television it is the background of A&E’s Longmire series or in a movie that was filmed here, such as Red Dawn. But on Saturday, Las Vegas will be featured on television for another reason.

    The Meadow City was designated as the Best Historic Day Trip in New Mexico for 2013. The segment airs at 4:30 p.m. Saturday on KOB channel 4.

    The segment was broadcast nationally on the Discovery Channel in late December.

  • Aragon announces run for judgeship

    Longtime attorney Anna M. Aragon announced Wednesday that she will be running for a judgeship in the 4th Judicial District, which encompasses San Miguel, Mora and Guadalupe counties.

    Aragon, a Democrat, will be seeking the Division 1 position, which is currently held by Gerald Baca. Baca was appointed to the post by Gov. Susana Martinez after longtime Judge Eugenio Mathis resigned.

    Baca said back in April that he would be running to retain the seat.

    The primary is in June with the General Election in November.

  • Accident claims life in Mora County

    A blown-out tire likely caused a fatal accident Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 25, near Wagon Mound.

    State Police who investigated the accident have not yet identified the victim, a male, who was ejected from his vehicle in the single-vehicle rollover.

    Police say the blowout caused the vehicle, a Ford SUV, to roll over. The identification of the driver is being delayed until next of kin are notified.

    Monday, Jan. 13 — “The Rio Grande Adventure,” a history of New Mexico textbook designed for the junior high schools in the state, has recently been released by Lyons and Carnahan, publishers. Author of the attractive and profusely illustrated book is Dr. Lynn I. Perrigo, head of the department of history and social science at Highlands University.

  • Local bank partners with PNM to boost business

    Public Service Company of New Mexico, a subsidiary of PNM Resources, announced recently it has completed a unique financing agreement designed to increase business with New Mexico banks.

    The agreement supports economic development in local communities and provides PNM with necessary capital funding to maintain its top quartile reliability and continue to improve its systems. Southwest Capital Bank based out of Las Vegas is one of the banks participating in the agreement.

  • Foster parent information meeting Wednesday

    The public is invited to an information meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 15, to learn about foster and adoptive parenting opportunities with New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department. The information meeting will be held at the local CYFD office at 2518 Ridge Runner Road.

    Currently there are 33 children in San Miguel County in the foster care system. There is a need for more foster parents in this community.
