  • Work of Art - Seattle 27.6, Denver 22.6

    Do you think it’ll work? For this Super Bowl edition of Work of Art, I asked a number of athletes, employees of the City Recreation Center — people who follow football — to predict the winner and the final score of Sunday’s game.

    Surprisingly, only West Las Vegas High School junior Brandon Gallegos predicted anything close to a slaughter. Brandon picks the Seattle Seahawks to beat the Denver Broncos 42-24. And why does he choose the Seahawks? “I don’t like Denver.” That’s reason enough.

  • Yara wins class; Cards 4th

    Kenneth Yara’s individual championship and four other top-three performances helped the Robertson wrestling team capture fourth place in the 2014 Gene Gagliardi Invitational this past Saturday in Trinidad, Colo.

    Robertson finished with 127.5 team points. West Las Vegas and Pecos, both fielding just a few wrestlers, landed up 11th and 12th, respectively, in the 16-school event. The Colorado schools La Junta (204 points), Florence (165.5) and Dolores Huerta (157.5) took the top three spots.

  • Cowgirl track nabs Air Force title

    COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The New Mexico Highlands women’s track and field team captured an event win (among NCAA Division II athletes) and added another NCAA provisional qualifier as the Cowgirls captured the Air Force Invitational title Saturday.

    After the weekend, head coach Bob DeVries kept things in perspective.

  • Cowboys face No. 9 WSC

    The New Mexico Highlands University Cowboy wrestling team (3-3, 1-3 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) will compete against the ninth-ranked Mountaineers of Western State Colorado University at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Wilson Complex.

    It will be the Cowboys’ first home dual of the season.

    “It’s a typical Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual; we have our work cut out for us, and it’s going to take a full team effort to succeed,” head coach Doug Moses noted.

  • Youth soccer registration open

    Las Vegas Youth Soccer League is accepting registration for spring season on a waiting-list basis. Assignment to teams will be made as openings are available. Fee is $50 per child. To register, sign up online at lasvegasyouthsoccer.org or visit Genesys on Bridge Street.
    Parents of those who participated in the league this past fall are asked to let coaches know if their children plan to return. Practice begins the week of March 10; games will start March 22-23.

  • Campos offered extension

    A divided Luna Community Board of Trustees voted Thursday to give President Pete Campos a one-year contract extension so that he can see the college’s accreditation process through.

    Now it’s up to Campos to decide whether he wants to stay an additional year. His current contract expires on June 30. If he accepts the extension, his contract would run until June 30, 2015.

  • City police giving up enforcement division

    For several years, the city’s enforcement services division has been under the umbrella of the Las Vegas Police Department.

    That meant that an animal control officer was able to issue parking tickets and that all enforcement services division officers ultimately reported to Las Vegas Police Chief Christian Montaño.

    That changed earlier this month with the reassignment of that division back to the city’s Community Development Department.

  • Water projects top wish lists

    New Mexico lawmakers are being inundated with requests to help pay for water infrastructure improvements, leaving many frustrated as they try to sort out priorities while the state wrestles with drought.

    From contaminated wells to a lack of storage for drinking water, members of the Senate Finance Committee heard Thursday from state and local water officials and fellow lawmakers about the growing needs around the state.
