  • Health fair Saturday at Abe Montoya center

    Alta Vista Regional Hospital is once again sponsoring its free community Health Fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Abe Montoya Recreation Center Gymnasium. Free health screenings and information will be featured from area health care providers, consumer advocates and groups, social service organizations and voluntary organizations.

  • Que Pasa - Sept. 19, 2014

    • West Las Vegas High School homecoming parade, 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19 starting at the county courthouse, east on National Ave. and Bridge Street to 12th Street, south on 12th Street to Douglas Ave., east on Douglas to Sixth Street, north on Sixth street until Carnegie Park. The homecoming game takes place at 7 p.m. Friday evening at Herrera Complex against the Capital Jaguars.


  • Mora County Notebook - Rains places at Rocky Mountain National Rendezvous competition

    DonDiego Rains, 10, of Holman, placed in various competitions at the Rocky Mountain National Rendezvous in Colorado, which he attended with his father in July.  

    Rendezvous is a recreation of the fur trade era where everything in sight must be of a pre-1840 style. Clothing is of the period, tents are canvas and cooking is over wood. All vehicles must be out of camp by Saturday evening and stay out until the following Saturday afternoon. No plastic, nylon, aluminum, electricity or propane are permitted.

    It is never easy to say goodbye to an old friend, and this time it is a very old friend. That huge, beloved Ponderosa Pine tree next to the road and just down from our yard died this spring.

  • School supplies donation

    The students and staff of Mike “Mateo” Sena Elementary in Sapello got a special treat last late month. The residents and guests of Pendaries RV Resort donated plenty of school supplies.

    In late August, several residents of the resort came to present hand-made backpacks, containing additional supplies, to the students.
