  • No surgeon on duty at Alta Vista

    Alta Vista Regional Hospital has confirmed that it lost surgical and obstetric physician coverage in recent days, prompting it to put an alternate plan into place to deal with patients in need of those services.

    Hospital spokeswoman Linda M. Leyba said in an email Tuesday that obstetrics has resumed service. But that’s not the case for surgery.

  • City judge race taking center stage

    With no mayoral race on the ballot for the March 4 election, the typically quiet race for municipal judge is taking center stage.

    In past years, incumbent Municipal Judge Eddie Trujillo has sailed into office, easily defeating his challengers. But this year the popular judge is facing stiff competition from Diane Moore, a former city councilor who has also enjoyed success at the polls. Also running in that race is Luna Community College employee Eric Cummings.

  • Boy, 12, found dead in New Mexico field

    LOS LUNAS — A 12-year-old boy’s body was discovered in a vacant lot in central New Mexico, and a teenage friend of the victim is being held on suspicion of murder, authorities said Wednesday.

    Valencia County Sheriff Louis Burkhard told reporters that Alex Madrid, of Albuquerque, was found Tuesday in a field west of Los Lunas after his parents reported him missing.

  • $6 billion state budget approved by Legislature

    SANTA FE — The Legislature crossed the finish line Thursday of a 30-day session that was filled with disputes between Democrats and Republican Gov. Susana Martinez.

    The House and Senate adjourned at noon Thursday.

    Wednesday, Feb. 19 — John Lawson, who purchased the Castañeda Hotel in 1962, is remodeling it and converting the second floor into two-room furnished apartments. When the conversion is completed during the summer, there will be 21 apartments on the second floor of the hotel. At that time there will be no more overnight accommodations. At the present time there are 15 apartments ready or nearly ready for occupancy, many of them already rented, and some overnight rooms.

    Sergeant pleads guilty in death
    LAS CRUCES — An Air Force sergeant in New Mexico has pleaded guilty to negligent child abuse in the death of his infant daughter.
    Prosecutors say 29-year-old Peter John Zayas entered his plea Wednesday in a federal court in Las Cruces.
    He’s been in federal custody since his April 2012 arrest.
    Zayas’ sentencing hearing hasn’t been set yet, but prosecutors say he could be facing up to 18 years in prison.
