    The Associated Press

ALBUQUERQUE — The Southwest continues to earn dismal marks for child well-being, with New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada ranking in the bottom five of an annual national report that grades states on education, health care and poverty.

New Mexico, which last year booted Mississippi from last place, moved back up to 49th in this year’s Kids Count Data Book, thanks to a slight drop in child poverty, improvements in high school graduation rates and a drop in the teenage birth rate.

Germany’s rigid school tracking system provides insight to the impact of how New Mexico schools treat children from different socioeconomic backgrounds, according to Highlands’ associate dean of education.

When German students are in fourth grade, they are enrolled in one of three curriculum tracks: training for service work, college-bound middle level managers, or a higher-level college track for physicians to musicians, said Associate Dean Dave Braun y Harycki.

It is troubling that a woman was able to walk away with her two children during a supervised visit at the local Children Youth and Families Department office.

We have to believe that judges don’t strip a parent of custody without having good cause. If anything, judges tend to be reluctant to take that action unless they have proof that a child’s wellbeing is at risk.
