  • Vatos finish eighth in sevens nationals

    The New Mexico Highlands University rugby team finished eighth in this past weekend’s National Small College Rugby Organization national sevens championship tournament.

    The tourney took place Saturday and Sunday at Talen Energy Stadium in Philadelphia, bringing top regional qualifiers from across the country.

    According to the organization, more than 240 men’s teams and approximately 110 women’s teams are affiliated with NSCRO.

  • Golf for a good cause

    Las Vegas-area golfers are invited to take part in several upcoming events, some of which will benefit various causes of interest to the community.

    • The third annual West Las Vegas Athletics Golf Fundraiser is coming up this Saturday, starting at 8:30 a.m. at the Gene Torres Golf Course.
    Entry cost is $400 per team of four, $100 an individual, with proceeds going to the WLV athletic department.

  • North-South this week in Albuquerque

    Rick Armijo will be coaching.

    And a couple of dozen others from the Las Vegas area will be playing.

    This weekend, the New Mexico High School Coaches Association will host its annual North-South All-Star Extravaganza in the greater Albuquerque area. Here are the details on game times and places.

    • Baseball: Class 1A-4A will play a three-game series (7 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday) at Santa Ana Star Field (UNM).

  • Stanley Cup Finals: Caps one win away

    WASHINGTON — Evgeny Kuznetsov smiled about getting four assists. He tried not to smile too much at the thought of being one win away from the Stanley Cup.

    With Kuznetsov and goaltender Braden Holtby leading the way, the Washington Capitals are on the verge of capturing the first title in their 43rd season after routing the Vegas Golden Knights 6-2 on Monday night to take a commanding 3-1 series lead.

  • West Schools submit $29m budget to state

    West Las Vegas Schools cut it close in terms of timing, but in terms of spending, there was some room to spare.

    On the heels of some years that involved drastic cuts, West Schools submitted a $29.5 million budget to the Public Education Department on May 31, just a few hours before its deadline.

  • Sullivan to plead in killing of Marquez

    A trial start date of Monday, June 11 had been set for Las Vegas man accused in a July 2016 homicide. 

    However, Daniel Sullivan is still scheduled to be in San Miguel District Court that day — but not for a murder trial.

    Sullivan, 28, is scheduled to enter into a plea agreement with the Fourth District Attorney's office on charges stemming from the July 2016 death of Steven Marquez in a South Pacific Street apartment.
