  • Professor publishes book

    Highlands University

    New Mexico Highlands University English professor Helen Blythe published a book that explores Victorian-era British writers’ work inspired by their adventures in colonial New Zealand.

    Palgrave Macmillan published Blythe’s 256-page book The Victorian Colonial Romance with the Antipodes, which was released May 21.

  • HU’s Howard receives Tech Champ Award

    Highlands University graduate Paul Howard won a Rio Rancho Public Schools 2014 Technology Champion award for the way he uses technology that helps his non-verbal students communicate for the first time.

    Howard started his position as a special education teacher at Rio Rancho High School in August 2013 and works in a self-contained classroom of eight students with special needs.

  • HU students inducted into Phi Kappa Phi

    The New Mexico Highlands University chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi academic honor society inducted 30 students at ceremonies earlier this month.

    Students from Highlands’ main campus, Rio Rancho and Santa Fe centers were inducted as well as one faculty member and two alumni.

  • Mora County Notebook - Graduations galore in Mora County

    After our college students graduated the celebrations turned to the younger graduates. On Friday, May 16, the kindergarten held its ceremony as the children leave the Holman site and graduate to first grade in Mora. There were many proud parents’ grand- parents cheering them on as they received their diploma/certificate. The next week the Head Start held its graduation ceremony on May 22 with 45 students graduating and again a full gym of parents and well-wishers.

    Summer is almost here. Our mountain folk welcome the warmer weather, and for many of us that translates  into vacation. Because I grew up on a dude ranch here at Gascon,   I know what summer and vacations mean.

    The rush would be on as reservations came in, mostly by letter. The log cabins had to be cleaned, with nine months of dirt and dust swept out. Horses had to be shod, saddles and tack repaired, and our storerooms filled with groceries.

    He’d played on this field a number of times before.

    In front of many of the same fans.

    And he’d done well here, whether wearing Kryptonite teal, Robertson red and white or West Las Vegas green and gold.

    But Nicholas Aragon couldn’t help being a little bit nervous anyway.

    “Coach D.J. (Stinsman) told me I’m starting, and that’s when I got the feeling of excitement but nerves,” he said.
