  • Baca achieves more raves in combine

    Mathew Baca, 15, of Las Vegas recently competed in Coach Dave Schuman’s National Underclassmen Combine.

    The event is a football competition where high school athletes go through testing in the 40 yard dash, shuttle run, vertical jump, broad jump, and bench press. They then have specific position skills evaluations by former NFL players and college coaches.  

  • All-district teams: 12 locals

    Adrian Jaramillo and his Lady Cardinals orchestrated one of the more impressive showings of the spring, reaching the final four in the Class 3A state softball tournament.

    Jaramillo earned Coach of the Year honors in District 2-3A after guiding Robertson to the regular-season championship.
    He was one of a dozen Las Vegans honored by the district, which released the list of awards for softball and baseball on May 20.

  • ‘Topes catcher cut after biting teammate

    NEW YORK — Miguel Olivo was released by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday, two days after biting off a piece of Triple-A Albuquerque teammate Alex Guerrero’s left ear during a dugout brawl.

    Olivo, a veteran catcher, and Guerrero, the highly paid Cuban second base prospect, fought during the Isotopes game at Salt Lake on Tuesday. The Dodgers suspended Olivo on Wednesday while they conducted an investigation.

  • Deal in place to save drive-in

    It’s official. The Fort Union Drive-In will be back in business soon.

    Taos real estate investor Felipe Cordova has purchased the digital projector, and all the documents are signed to move forward on the opening of the age-old attraction.

    “We will have the equipment in place by June 9, and if all goes well we will open Friday, June 13,” Cordova said in a telephone interview Wednesday.

  • A perfect finish - Grad never missed a day of school

    Brandon “Chach” Ty Romero Trujillo has accomplished something that most students can’t even imagine.

    Next Friday, the Robertson High School senior will walk across the stage at Mike Marr gymnasium and receive his high school diploma with perfect attendance for not one school year, but for 13.

    That’s right. Trujillo has not missed a single day of school since kindergarten.
