New Mexico Highlands University anthropology graduate students Will Marquardt and T’Shawna Span presented their novel bioarchaeology studies at the international conference for the Society of American Archeology in Austin, Texas, late last month.

The annual conference is the largest gathering of archaeologists in the world, with more than 3,000 in attendance this year.

Both students are graduate assistants for anthropology professor Warren Lail and he also advises them.

The Cowgirls, coached by Bob DeVries, amassed 170 team points in the three-day competition. That was second only to host Adams State, a perennial national title contender; the Grizzlies had 192 points to lead the 10 participating schools.

  • Last shot at state

This past weekend’s District 2-2A tripled the number of Pecos athletes qualifying for the small-school state track and field championships (to be held Friday and Saturday at University of New Mexico’s track and soccer complex).
