    This event is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Friday, June 6, at the Las Vegas National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, on Highway 281, east of Las Vegas.   • Challenger makes age an issue in primary race

    In bidding for a political comeback in northern New Mexico, former Democratic legislator Bengie Regensberg is delivering a blunt campaign message in the primary election.

    Regensberg has told voters in personal appearances and advertising that Democratic state Rep. Nick Salazar of Ohkay Owingeh is too old for another term in the Legislature.

    • The New Mexico Highlands Swimming pool is offering swim lessons for children four and older starting on Monday, June 2. The lessons run Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. for the cost of $30 for eight lessons. Registration is currently taking place. For more information, call Phil at 454-3073.

  • Just a Thought - Don’t let unhappy people drag you down

    One crab in a bucket without a lid will climb up the side of the bucket and escape. If there are two or more crabs in the bucket, there is no need for a lid.

    You see, a single crab will see the opportunity of escape above and will climb upwards and succeed in reaching the top. You need to put a lid or cover on the top of the bucket to keep the single crab from getting out. If you have two or more crabs in the bucket, you need no lid. None of the crabs will be able to escape.

  • Athlete of the Year - Highlands’ Slack reaps national track and field honor

    All-American, five checks. National championship, double check. Division II Female Field Athlete of the Year is now a big check.

    New Mexico Highlands University junior Salcia Slack has been named the 2014 NCAA Division II Female Field Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, the organization announced this past week.
