  • Robbers on win streak

    Corey Deighan limited the Trinidad Triggers to a single earned run and struck out five through seven solid innings Wednesday night, and the visiting Las Vegas Train Robbers picked up a 5-3 win.

    It was the Train Robbers’ second win in as many nights at Central Park in Trinidad, Colo. They’d won three straight — their longest win streak to date — including a 9-4 win Monday night at the division-leading Santa Fe Fuego (14-5).

    Las Vegas never trailed, although Trinidad tied it 1-1 after one complete inning.

  • Major moves in Mora hoops

    New coaches will man the sidelines this coming winter at Mora boys’ and girls’ basketball games following wholesale changes in the high school’s coaching staff.

    Marco Sanchez, a teacher with the Mora school district, has been hired to replace veteran coach James Branch at the helm of the Rangers’ boys’ basketball team.

    And Greg Laumbach is the heir apparent to longtime coach Mark Cassidy in overseeing the Rangerettes program. Laumbach learned of his selection within hours of winning election as Mora County sheriff on Tuesday.

    This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

    Charette Lakes: Trout fishing was sporadic at best this past week. A few good size trout were caught by anglers using Power Bait.

  • Mora County Notebook - 4-H club visits and plants a garden

    On Sunday afternoon the Mora Rough Riders 4- H Club took part in the Headwaters Community Garden, sponsored by the Mora Presbyterian Church. The 4-H- ers ages 5 to 19   planted seeds in a plot of the Presbyterian Community Garden. They were doing a community service project. The plot that they worked on belongs to the Presbyterian Church and the produce raised on it will supply food for the Food Pantry.

    They dug the rows to plant their seeds. They planted pumpkins, beans, squash and corn. They then watered the area.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Rains have turned the brown fields green again

    What a treat it is to have our climate change back to what is was like in the old days. Rains in just the nick of time have turned the brown fields green again, and wildflowers have begun to bloom once again. The hummingbirds finally have something other than our sugar water to enjoy.

  • Baca takes judge race

    Fending off a challenge from fellow Las Vegas attorneys Anna Aragon and Suzanne Gaulin, Gerald Baca won convincingly in the Democratic primary for the Fourth Judicial District Division 1 seat on Tuesday.

    Meanwhile, area voters also chose Las Vegas Police Chief Christian Montaño for a general election faceoff with incumbent San Miguel County Magistrate Judge Edward Gallegos, and they gave the nod to probate judge Charli Otero.
