  • WNBA rookie has record All-Star game

    PHOENIX — Showtime Shoni had quite the All-Star debut.
    Shoni Schimmel, a rookie who doesn’t even start for her own team, put on a record-breaking performance — scoring 29 points to help the East beat the West 125-124 on Saturday in the first WNBA All-Star game to go to overtime.
    Hitting big shot after big shot in the fourth quarter and overtime, including a behind-the-head flip over 6-foot-8 Brittney Griner, Schimmel gave the fans a great show.

  • County agrees to pay $70K

    San Miguel County has agreed to pay nearly $70,000 in back pay to eight current and former detention officers to settle a lawsuit alleging that the officers weren’t paid for overtime worked or compensated for being on-call.

    The settlement was reached last week during a nearly four-hour settlement conference in federal court.

    While the county has agreed to a monetary settlement to end the lawsuit, County Manager Les Montoya said the county isn’t admitting to any wrongdoing.

    Greg Griego was born into this world on Valentine’s Day, in 1982, and that’s fitting because of how he lived his life.

    He demonstrated his love for his daughter, his family, and his colleagues by being a good listener who inspired many. He was his mother’s best friend, his brothers’ role model, and the best dad he could be to his princess, Jaelynn.

    On Monday, Griego succumbed to brain cancer – just seven months after doctors told him he had the illness.

  • CYFD facing tough questions

    Two Las Vegas children who were the subject of an Amber Alert are back in CYFD custody after they were located with their mother late Tuesday in Alamosa, Colo.

    But now the Children Youth and Families Department is facing some tough questions about how the woman was able to flee the local CYFD office with the children during what was supposed to have been a supervised visit.

    Among those wanting answers is Gov. Susana Martinez.

  • Plane shot down over Ukraine

    HRABOVO, Ukraine — A Malaysia Airlines passenger plane carrying 295 people was shot down over eastern Ukraine on Thursday, Ukrainian officials said, and both the government and the pro-Russia separatists fighting in the region denied any responsibility for downing the aircraft.
    As plumes of black smoke rose up near a rebel-held village of Hrabovo, an Associated Press journalist counted at least 22 bodies at the wreckage site 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the Russian border.

  • Medical helicopter crashes near here

    NEWKIRK — A medical helicopter flying to pick up a patient crashed Thursday into the side of a New Mexico hilltop, bursting into flames and killing all three crew members on board, authorities said.

    The helicopter was flying from Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe to Tucumcari when it disappeared from radar at 2:48 a.m.

    It went down near Newkirk along Interstate 40 about 135 miles east of Albuquerque and about 30 miles from Tucumcari.
