    Editor’s note:  To commemorate Labor Day, the Optic is featuring short profiles of a few of the workers in our community who quietly make a difference. To all workers, we wish you a restful Labor Day.

  • Looking Back - Sept. 1, 2014

    In 1964
    Tuesday, Sept. 1 — New Mexico today submitted a $3.7 million request to the federal government for the first stage in its local war on poverty program. The money will be used to set up a 1,000-boy training camp near Las Vegas. The camp, which will eventually be used to train boys from throughout the Southwest, will have a staff of up to 150 persons, and will probably use Peace Corps trainees as instructors.

    Bad news, Longmire fans. A&E confirmed last week that it is not renewing the series for what would have been its fourth season. The series was shot in and around Las Vegas and has a loyal following here. There is still hope that another network may pick up the series.
