  • Palabras Pintorescas: Ttom’s treasure hunt brings out sweet memories

    My nephew, and sweet brother Bill’s son Ttom (yes, that is spelled correct) and his family were just here for the annual summertime ranch visit. Ttom and John were sorting through that huge “old-stuff,” big pile of both photographs and old family papers. They found some interesting old family memorabilia.

    Las Vegas has a fabulous history and we read and hear about it almost daily. There are famous statesmen, notable outlaws, interesting places and historic events. One of the most interesting stories about Las Vegas’ past is the history of the grand old pipe organ.

  • East raises lunch prices by 25 cents

    Passing through the lunch line at Las Vegas City Schools costs a quarter more for students this year. The board unanimously approved the cost increase late last month.

    The reasoning behind the increase was to be in compliance with the reimbursement amount the district receives from the state.

    The new cost for lunch at the district is $2.75, compared to $2.50 last school year. All of the district’s students get free breakfast. Students who qualify for reduced lunch will be charged 40 cents.

  • New voting machines set for elections

    SANTA FE — New Mexico voters will be casting ballots this November on new machines that have raised concerns among a legislative agency and some county clerks.

    The voting machines, which cost nearly $12 million to buy and set up, will make their debut in the Nov. 4 general election, the Albuquerque Journal reported Friday. Clerks in all 33 counties have been thoroughly trained in their use, according to the Secretary of State’s Office.
