  • Prep Football: Cardinals, Dons both get hard-earned wins

    Both Las Vegas-area high school football teams came away with hard-earned victories Friday night.

    The Robertson Cardinals held off their Homecoming opponent. Socorro, scoring the game's last nine points for a 33-24 win. The West Las Vegas Dons took a long trip the Hatch Valley and outlasted the host Bears, 40-21.

  • West’s Homecoming in the week ahead

    West Las Vegas Schools didn’t provide a great deal of information about this week’s upcoming Homecoming events, but a basic schedule was provided.

    This year’s theme is “Now Starring…Your WLV DONS!”

    Monday’s theme is Dynamic Duo Day. Tuesday is Decades Day, featuring the Senior\Junior Powder Puff game and mushball game at the Herrera Complex.

    Wednesday is Favorite Movie Character Day. Thursday is Class Color Day, featuring a 9:30 a.m. pep rally with skits.

    Okay, just sit back and relax. I know you deserve it. You have had a long week. Wherever you are, whatever lies ahead for your day or week, regardless of what has you anxious or uptight right now, just inhale slowly, exhale gently and relax.

  • We Love Paris in the fall

    Cole Porter’s haunting song comes to mind: “I love Paris in the spring time ... I love Paris in the fall.”

    And why? Remember in April in the Plaza Ballroom, Ronald Maltais and Mary Kay Robinson delighted us with flute and piano pieces with French flair. This fall we are in for another sumptuous musical treat.

  • Statewide rule change prohibits huddles at midcourt, midfield, etc.

    Las Vegas Optic reports

    The New Mexico Activities Association’s Board of Directors voted Wedensday in favor of a proposal to add rules in all sports that would prohibit team huddles on or near the center of the field, court, diamond or mat. 

    The vote took place as part of a regular Board of Directors session held in the NMAA Hall of Pride and Honor in Albuquerque.

  • LVCS approves creation of electronic sports team, drops STOPit app

    The Las Vegas City Schools board approved the adoption of a competitive video game team at its regular meeting Thursday night.

    Recognized by the New Mexico Activities Association, the school-sanctioned activity known as “e-sports” pits a team of video game players from one school against other schools across the state. The best-performing teams will even compete for a state championship title.

    The path going forward for the Las Vegas Housing Authority seems to be, as the saying goes, clear as mud.

  • Police: Men let child abuse suspect out of car

    Two 19-year-old parents were arrested on child abuse charges last week following a fight at a Las Vegas apartment complex, and later, two more men were arrested after one of the parents was allegedly let out of a police car by civillians.

    Roman Sandoval and Alycia Lucero were booked into the San Miguel County Detention Center on felony abuse of a child charges after police were called to the couple’s residence around 2 a.m. on Sept. 13. Las Vegas police had initially been called to the residence in the 500 block of Mountain View Drive for a domestic disturbance.
