    Cop allegedly had sex with underage girl

    LAS CRUCES — A New Mexico police detective has been arrested on charges of having an inappropriate relationship with a teenager.
    The Las Cruces Police Department said Michael Garcia was arrested Friday in connection with allegations that he had sex with a teenage girl believed to be 17 at the time.
    The 37-year-old was charged with one count each of criminal sexual penetration of a minor and criminal sexual contact of a minor.

    Tuesday, Aug. 27 — A meeting will be held on the night of Sept. 9 at Las Vegas, when Robert De La Rue, executive engineer for the Highway Department, will seek permission to bypass the city with the new Interstate 25. The “anti-bypass law” makes permission mandatory from all incorporated communities or county units before the highway department may go around any community. Similar meetings are scheduled for Tierra Amarilla and Truth or Consequences.

  • Coalition taking over shelter

    The City of Las Vegas is planning to hand over operations of its animal shelter to the Animal Welfare Coalition of Northeastern New Mexico.

    City councilors unanimously approved a contract with the local non-profit at Wednesday evening’s council meeting.

  • Nepotism language scrutinized

    The fate of the Luna Community College nepotism policy remains on hold for the time being.  

    For several months the board of trustees has been looking at potentially changing the policy. Some, however, call it a political ploy to allow board members to favor the hiring of relatives. Meanwhile others say the policy is too restrictive and does not allow qualified applicants to have a fair chance of obtaining employment at the college if there is any relation to someone currently employed with the college — driving them to seek employment elsewhere.

    But the folks at family and individual counseling group Amistad Y Resolana — who work with people who often have been written off —  looked at the classic car and saw its potential.

  • Utility workers saved woman

    Two city utility department employees who saved the life of an elderly woman this past June earned recognition from Las Vegas Mayor Alfonso Ortiz Jr. at Wednesday night’s council meeting.

    The pair found the woman face down and apparently dead in the front yard of her home off Eighth Street and revived her with cardiopulmonary resuscitation and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

    The woman, identified as Frances Esquibel, 79, passed away last week at an Albuquerque nursing home.
