  • Crews monitor WIPP for radiation

    CARLSBAD — Officials checking the presence of airborne radiation at an underground site in southeastern New Mexico where the U.S. government seals away low-grade nuclear waste say surface tests have detected no contamination.

    Samples were taken at several sites around the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant after an air monitor found radiation on the underground levels of the facility around 11:30 p.m. Friday, the U.S. Department of Energy said in a news release.

  • Board to gov: Reconsider

    The San Miguel County Commission is weighing in on the controversy over Gov. Susana Martinez selecting a man who is suing Highlands University as a member of the school’s Board of Regents.

    The commission voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a resolution opposing Gov. Susana Martinez’s appointment of Carl Foster to the board.

    The resolution asks the governor to withdraw the nomination and it asks Foster to withdraw his own name. Absent of that happening, the resolution states, the Senate Rules Committee should vote down the nomination.

  • Blood-alcohol level not tested - Man gets 9 years for fatal crash

    Aileen Smith will never forget the moment her life changed forever.

    She and her husband, Zach, of Colorado Springs, were traveling on southbound Interstate 25 near Rowe in the SUV they had purchased six months earlier, and she had just texted her grandmother that they were back on the road after fueling up.

    Then there was the violent crash, and suddenly Aileen Smith, who was seven months pregnant, was surrounded by twisted metal and deployed airbags, her terrified husband asking if she was OK.

  • Parson gets 2-year extension

    Gene Parson has been in education for three decades and it looks as if he will add at least two more years to his service.

    During a board meeting on Tuesday evening, the West Las Vegas School Board unanimously approved a two-year contract for Parson.

    “It is a good feeling and it is quite a treat especially since it was unanimous,” Parson said in a telephone interview on Thursday morning. “It is very comforting that those that hire you and put you in this position have the confidence in you.”

  • State budget bill remains in limbo

    SANTA FE — A $6 billion budget proposal was sent back to a House committee Wednesday for possible revisions to try to break a stalemate over education spending.

    With the House still unable to finish work on a budget for financing state government, Senate leaders are starting to assemble their own budget proposal as the Legislature moves into the final week of its 30-day session.

    Friday, Feb. 14 — The Impalas and Percy Faison with Litra Romero, West Las Vegas Schools band director, as master of ceremonies, entertained the New Mexico House of Representatives and Senate Wednesday in Santa Fe. The Las Vegas musical group and Faison received a standing ovation from the House after performing Spanish folk music, rock and roll, blues and ballads. They performed, among other songs, “Blue Moon,” “Never on Sunday,” and “Los Ojos de Pancha.”
