  • State departments holding joint job fair Tuesday

    The New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) and the New Mexico Human Services Department (HSD) will be holding a joint job fair in Santa Fe on Tuesday. There are about 200 positions open between the two cabinet agencies with various jobs located throughout the state.

    The job fair takes place from 8 a.m. to noon on Tuesday at the New Mexico State Personnel Offices at 2600 Cerrillos Road in Santa Fe.

  • Another day, another blaze

    The Inn of Las Vegas — the once popular Las Vegas hotel that for years was the go-to venue for wedding receptions and other special occasions — was destroyed by fire Tuesday.

    It was the second fire in Las Vegas in four days. Early Saturday morning, someone doused the door at Municipal Court with gasoline and lit it on fire. Firefighters were able to extinguish that blaze before it did much damage.

    SANTA FE — Their bright, young eyes welled up with tears. Here and there in the dugout, girls sobbed.
    It wasn’t supposed to end this way.

    But one bad day was enough to bring an end to a summer’s worth of hard work and dreams of World Series glory.

    The Las Vegas juniors softball team — playing as Team New Mexico after cruising to a second straight state championship — lost twice to Team West Texas, a group out of Eagle Pass, Texas, in Wednesday’s Southwest Regional championship.

  • Rec Center roof damage extensive

    Three months after fierce winds ripped off a portion of the roof at the city’s Abe Montoya Recreation Center the damage has yet to be repaired, which means the popular swimming pool remains closed to the public.

    The months-long closure of the pool has created a domino effect, resulting in low traffic at the rec center on Sundays. That, in turn, prompted the recreation center to close its doors on Sundays, frustrating many of the people who visit the center on weekends for workouts.

    There’s good news and bad news for patrons of the recreation center.

    FRANKLIN, Tenn. — Community Health Systems Inc., Alta Vista Regional Hospital’s parent company, has agreed to pay $98 million to settle federal claims of improper billing by the hospital company.

    Buffalo stew, green chile dinner

    A buffalo stew dinner will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday (today) at the Father George Salazar Hall. There will be live entertainment. $10 admission; children 5 and under are free. Also featured will be Los Zapateados group and live Civil War drills.
