  • Manager, councilor trade verbal barbs

    Councilor Tonita Gurule-Giron and City Manager Timothy Dodge exchanged verbal barbs at Tuesday night’s council, with Dodge at one point telling the councilwoman that she was “flat out lying.”

    The spat occurred after Dodge announced that he had appointed Ann Marie Gallegos as the new interim finance director and Pamela Marrujo and the new interim housing director.  

  • Santa Rosa cop shoots man

    The Associated Press
    Authorities say a Santa Rosa police officer has shot a 20-year-old Oklahoma man during a chase.

    New Mexico State Police said the officer shot Kenny Silvers, of McAlester, Okla., early Tuesday following a pursuit near a rail yard.

    Thursday, Feb. 27 — City police are having trouble with their parking meters. Tuesday morning, 12 meters were found without any money, although the meters themselves had not been damaged. Whoever robbed the meter was wasteful, though, since pennies were found at the base of every empty meter. Yesterday morning another meter was found lying down, broken open and containing only four cents. The robbed meters have been mostly on Seventh Street, although there was at least one on University, Sixth, Eighth and Douglas.

    FFA bingo fundraiser planned for Sunday

    Las Vegas FFA Chapter fundraiser bingo, 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 2 at the Father George Salazar Building on National Ave. near Immaculate Conception Church. Tickets are $5 and may be purchased at the door. Proceeds will be used to attend regional and state FFA competitions.

  • Municipal election is Tuesday

    For the first time in the city’s  history, there is no mayor’s race on the ballot of a regular city election.

    Prior to the new city charter being enacted in March 2010, elections were held every two years for a mayor. But in 2014,

    Mayor Alfonso Ortiz Jr. was re-elected to the post for a four- year term, and that leaves the municipal judge post as the only citywide position on this years ballot.

  • Another milestone - Meat processing plant expanding

    The Martinez family’s dream came to fruition nearly a year ago with the opening of Martinez and Sons Processing, and the family business keeps expanding. This time around the business is selling frozen USDA inspected beef with the hopes of selling freshly harvested beef within the next few months, if all goes as planned.
