  • Accused school shooter competent to stand trial

    ROSWELL — A Roswell judge concluded Friday that the 12-year-old boy accused of opening fire in his middle school gym and injuring two students is competent to stand trial.

    State District Judge Freddie Romero presided over a brief hearing for the boy, who is too young to be tried as an adult.

    Romero set another hearing for the end of April and ordered that the boy be held in Bernalillo County after prosecutors raised concerns about keeping him in a juvenile detention facility near Roswell.

  • Gov seeks to dismiss public records suit

    SANTA FE — Gov. Susana Martinez is raising constitutional arguments in defending against a lawsuit by The Associated Press. The news organization is seeking public records about her travel and work schedules as well as cell phone calls by the governor and her staff.

    In documents filed Monday in state district court, the governor’s lawyer said a court injunction sought by the AP to enforce the public records law would violate the constitutional doctrine of separation of powers.

  • Scientist to lead energy, water research group

    SANTA FE — A scientist from Los Alamos National Laboratory has been tapped to help New Mexico with complex issues related to energy and water science.

    The state Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department says Jeri Sullivan Graham will lead the Brackish Water Work Group.

    One of the group’s overarching goals is to identify the state’s brackish water resources and find ways to make it more available and usable as a buffer against drought.

  • Officer cleared in shooting

    The state police officer who shot a disoriented New York man who was driving the wrong way on Interstate 25 the night of Jan. 4 has been cleared of any wrongdoing.

    District Attorney Richard Flores announced Wednesday that he has determined that officer Jonathan Wright was justified in his actions.

    The former superintendent of the Las Vegas City Schools District cited health issues and a strained relationship with the board as her reasons for not seeking an extension of her contract.

    Martin Suazo Sr. has made his living as an insurance agent, but the well-known local businessman’s passion lies with basketball.

    And now he’s on a mission to get the word about a shooting technique aimed at improving accuracy in the sport.

    Martin was one of a few individuals born in a small community named El Valle de los Indios, situated about 40 miles west of Albuquerque. He was born April 30, 1938.

  • Electric co-op sued over fire

    The Mora-San Miguel Electric Co-op has been hit with a lawsuit claiming that its negligence caused the 10,000-acre Tres Lagunas Fire last May that burned for weeks and damaged land owned by two property owners.

    The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in state District Court in Santa Fe on behalf of David Old, his businesses — Old Wood and the Viveash Ranch — and River Bend Ranch LLC. It seeks unspecified compensatory, punitive and treble damages, along with attorney fees and expenses for bringing the lawsuit.
