  • Looking Back - March 24, 2014

    In 1964
    Thursday, March 26 — Top high school journalism, business and drama students will participate in the 18th edition of Highlands Day. Three state-wide organizations — The State Commerce Club, the State High School Press Association and the New Mexico Thespian Conference — will bring 1,300 students to the campus for programs which in each case are highlighted by an awards banquet. The HU music and drama departments will provide a Broadway musical for the visitors — this year the hilarious “Guys and Dolls.”

  • Hospital, union reach deal

    More than six years after employees at Alta Vista Regional Hospital first voted to form a union, they finally have a contract with the hospital.

    Of the 184 employees covered by the union, 95 percent voted Wednesday to ratify the agreement negotiated by the hospital and the National Union of Hospital and Health Care Employees-District 1199.

    For Amanda Vigil, a registered nurse who has worked at Alta Vista for 10 years, the new contract is a blessing.

  • Remembering a pioneer - Thal, pioneer surgeon, dies at 88

    Felicia Thal describes herself and her late husband, Alan, as simple people. But their life stories are far from simple. Alan Thal, a pioneering surgeon who adopted this area as his home, died peacefully last Friday at the family home. He was 88.

    But there is no doubt that Felicia Thal has lived her life to the fullest as well. She was named Cattleman of the Year in the early 1990s, and numerous awards honoring her work are proudly displayed on the walls of their living room, located in Golondrinas in Mora County.

  • Mold ruled out at old courthouse

    San Miguel County officials are still trying to determine what caused the foul smell that made employees in the Assessor’s Office sick on Tuesday, but they have been able to rule out mold.

    County Manager Les Montoya said that the Albuquerque lab called in to conduct tests ruled out mold on Wednesday.

    Besides combing through the Assessor’s Office, the firm went to the building’s basement and didn’t find anything of concern.

    The Assessor’s Office is located on the first floor of the old county courthouse building.

  • State to study cost-sharing for Amtrak

    SANTA FE — New Mexico plans to study whether to help pay part of the cost of keeping Amtrak’s Southwest Chief on its current route, which includes Las Vegas.

    A state budget signed by Republican Gov. Susana Martinez allocates $50,000 to the Legislative Council Service to study a proposal by Amtrak for New Mexico, Colorado and Kansas to share the costs of maintaining and improving more than 600 miles of track through their states.
