  • Cinco de Mayo mariachi concert Sunday at Ilfeld

    New Mexico Highlands University presents a Cinco de Mayo Mariachi Concert at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 4 in Ilfeld Auditorium, 900 University Ave.
    The award-winning Highlands University Mariachi Vaqueros de la Sierra will perform, along with the professional Mariachi Differencia of Santa Fe and the Don Mariachi del Oeste of West Las Vegas High School.
    Benny Lucero began directing the Mariachi Vaqueros de la Sierra fall semester 2013.

  • Romero: City crew at fault

    City Attorney Dave Romero says a city crew was at fault for his April 10 accident because workers left a manhole in the middle of the street open and unattended and did nothing to warn motorists about the hazard.

  • Three-day run for play - ‘Sad Room’ to debut here Friday

    Another original play by area and native playwright will hit the stage in a few days. Patricia Crespin’s “The Sad Room” will be shown as part of Wize Latina Productions starting with a show at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Sala de Madrid on the campus of New Mexico Highlands University.

    Two other shows will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday, all at Sala de Madrid.

    Ticket’s for “The Sad Room” are $10 general admission, $8 seniors and $5 for students.

  • LV hosting history conference

    History buffs from around the state will be in Las Vegas from Thursday through Saturday for the 2014 New Mexico History Conference.

    “Some of them are historians. Some are wannabe historians. Some are just people who are interested in some of the history in different parts of the state,” said Rudy Laumbach, president of the local Citizens Committee for Historic Preservation, which is helping to coordinate the conference.

    “It gives us an opportunity to showcase what we have in Las Vegas,” he said.

  • Ex-state education official indicted

    A former New Mexico Public Education Department official has been indicted in what federal authorities call a bribery scheme involving two Illinois education-company executives.

    An indictment filed last week in U.S. District Court in northern Illinois alleges Arturo Martinez took bribes from 58-year-old Jowhar Soultanali and his son, 34-year-old Kabir Kassam, as part of a $33 million fraud racket.
